This is so sad. I have to tell you though that the laws in NJ are so different for single people or even couples who don't have children. The state does not make it easy to help these people. When I was a welfare director the most they could get was $140 per month if able to work and $210 if they were disabled. Who can live on that. I was also only able to pay their rent under certain conditions however it wasn't for an indefinate period of time. I had a man who was collecting a VA check so it reduced his monthly amount. Wow he got $70.00 from the state. He was a handful and an alcoholic but the nicest guy in the world. I did all I could to help him. I was told they found him underneath a trailer frozen to death. This is something I will never forget for the rest of my life. Some people chose to live this way but there are so many who don't deserve this.

It's so true... I just had my first son not that long ago. When it was just me and fiance there was no help we could ever get. When you have a child there is alot more help out there for you.

That so sad about that guy...

Like you said some people do choose to live that way but I know there are so many people out there that want a way out but can't get the help.

the homeless man was asked to get in the car for shelter, he said "you're not taking me to the police station are u?"

Imagine sleepin in a sewer during the winter, eating out of trash, not wanting to wash up because it's so cold. With 11,000 homeless, there should be a town specifically for homeless people where they can work and sleep under a roof. Middletown is a central location.

I use to get calls in the middle of the night. The police would pick someone up that was on the street and I would have to place them. The people were scared to death at first but once they realized they were not getting arrested they came willingly. Not sure if you all know this but everytown has an ordinance in place that they are the "overseer of the poor" regardless if there is state funding or not. Also if someones house is condemed because of code violations and the gov't can't help due to restrictions the town must step in to pay. I had this a few times.

It's a shame... my heart always goes out to people who are homeless.

But like we said before there are people out there who choose to live that way.

I will never forget this story... A lady came up to my father with a child asking for money to feed her daughter. My father responded by saying I wouldn't give you money but if you want to come inside this store I'll buy you both something to eat. The lady refused the food!! She said she wanted money.

Can you imagine!! She had a little girl with her.

Yea of course. See many homeless stay near the shore and many are from northern towns. I know these acres of land behind one neighborhood off 520, the owner died and it's still there idle. The state can bus all 11,000 there and make this program the envy of the nation.
