If you're commuting to Englewood, I would stay on the eastern side of Bergen County. Hillsdale, Park Ridge, Montvale, Woodcliff Lake, Washington Township, are all nice towns over there that are definitely a little more spread out than SE Bergen near Englewood. Good luck!

You could also take a look at NW Bergen, the Wyckoff, Franklin Lakes, Oakland, Mahwah.

this thread is several months old, so i doubt the OP is going to check it.

still, i'll suggest a town that hasn't been mentioned yet:
rockleigh.

it's a tiny, semi-rural town in NE bergen county that has a pastoral feel and some homes on large lots. excellent school system, too.

otherwise, i'd suggest saddle river, upper saddle river, eastern ho-ho-kus, certain parts of ramsey and mahwah, franklin lakes, etc. in general, northwestern bergen county seems like the place to go if a town like rockleigh doesn't fit the bill.

We are not considering Alpine because of the school system and heard that people send their kids to private school. We would prefer a good public school but not a really big one (like Tenafly). Should we look westward or further north?
again, i know the OP isn't going to see this, but i felt i had to respond.

since when are the affluent "east hill" sections of englewood, tenafly, or cresskill "urban"? that's a new one.

also, what's wrong with alpine's one K-8 school? i've heard that's it's quite good.

to be honest, it sounds like the OP is searching for a town along the lines of mendham or chester. problem is, the daily commute from that area to englewood would be quite long and difficult.

sweetpotato is on a distinguished road
sounds like it needs to be a small town with its own hs, because op considers tenafly public school big, and their hs is about 250/class.

LMAO at Creskill and Tenafly being called urban May want to check out Rockleigh. Also, maybe a bit west...Kinnelon/Butler area. Actually, Mendham and Chester might be what you are looking for exactly!
