The most realistic reality shows about families are Nanny 911 and Trading Spouses, or whatever it's called. It's too depressing.

I've caught glimpses of the Orange County and New York versions. Both are just entertainment using stereotypes to boost ratings. I don't think intelligent folks use shows like this to gain a proper opinion. Folks are more sophisticated than that these days.

But I understand the angst those of you still in Jersey may have, depending on how old you are. In the early 1970's, whenever I got transferred to a new base, I would hear, "You're from New Jersey; What exit"? It got really old after awhile.

As far as the accent; even in the late 1960's in East Orange, it seemed like more a socio-economic thing. Some of us had it more pronounced than others, even in the same high school. I saw "cawfee" and "tawk". My best friend didn't. I say "rad-e-ator", not "ray-d-ator". So what? Most people from New Jersey I've met elsewhere are the sharpest cookies you'll ever want to meet. It's an attitude. And though I don't live there anymore, I hope, "youse guys" never lose it.

If any of those people are "real" housewives someone has reinvented what "real" means. I would expect to see a few soccer moms getting out of minivans without makeup if they're going to show anything remotely real.

I am morbidly curious about this, if not quite excited... Anyone else curious to see how our lovely state is presented?
Sure I'm gonna try to watch it and hope it's not boring like when I flipped through the other ones. Look at the professions of each character:

cosmetologist
spa customer at the shore
construction
interior designer/ catering/ event planner
real estate firm

hahaha. sounds very steriotypical

exactly what I said. expecially cosmetologist, construction, and the shore girl. this show makes me sick. what bugs me is people who actually try to live up to stereotypes. you'd be amazed by the stories I could tell you about your typical people, and they try to live up to these steretypes. do any of you guys notice this in the adult world? I'm hoping by the time my age group reaches adulthood, they won't act so stupid by trying to live up to stereotypes. it's horrible.

i'll tell you a few:

I'm 100% Italian and so is this other guy I know. He used to be normal like me, but then one day when we were in 9th grade he started sporting this NY accent and he acted like this big tough guido guy and he always said "I'm gonna beetchu up!" w/ like a deep NY accent, and I said to him "Dude... that's not how you talk." Ridiculous! And this other kid always tried to copy us, and he would also sport this horrible accent, jsut because he thought it was part of our state. and some girl I know always gives that "Jersey attitude". it's so fake, she goes out of her way to act like a total b-----, and she sports this like fake jersey girl attitude thing. it's just like all of those people you see on myspace (any of you guys ever go on myspace?)

Sometimes it takes a while for a truly nasty person to come into their nastyness. Most likely it's not a phase. Males trying to act tough is really nothing new but with the snoop dog accents? That is a little much. Really over the line.

With the Gotti show I was surprised that the network didn't get lots of complaints. She was beyond tacky as she was trailed daily with the cameras. Those kids, the houses, the clothes. That was the most negative typing of Italian Americans I have seen but the public obviously watched and not much complaining by any watchdog groups reported.

If any particular ethnic group is being skewered like this and there are few to no complaints then it must not be much of a problem for them.
What else can one assume?

Usually people who try to live up to a stereotype have no identity of their own. I think myspace is full of dull people i stopped using it.
