Hi all. I need some help.

I am planning to attend Penn in the fall as a graduate student. My husband will be working in central NJ (around Skillman/Bridgewater, which is about 25 miles from Trenton). I had a breakdown today in terms of where we will live. I would love to live, if not in Philadelphia, then right outside of it, but in a place that doesn't have him commuting 1.5 hours each morning. We are in our late 20s and I would like to be in an area that is not boring. Can you offer any advice? I really don't want to live around Trenton and commute each day from there. I fear for my mental state if I don't figure this out soon.

Thank you!

It would be really hard for you not to live around Trenton and be close to UPenn and Bridgewater. The best place I would suggest would be Yardley Boro or Lower Makefield Twp. if you don't want to live in Mercer County, NJ. There you would be able to take public transportation (SEPTA) to a place relatively close to UPenn campus (30th St Station). Bridgewater is very inaccessible to the Mercer Cty area because there is only one way in (Rt. 206), and sometimes that can be a parking lot. You simply cannot live any closer to Philadelphia than lower Bucks County or Mercer County (Hamilton/Lawrence/West Windsor) and expect either one of you to have a semi-reasonable commute to West Phila or Bridgewater. Skillman may look as if it is close to Bridgewater on a map, but they are not close in practical terms. If his job is in Skillman, Yardley/Makefield, or even New Hope is a possibility. If it is in Bridgewater, you will have no choice but to consider New Jersey.

You can try Collinswood. It is young, hip and right outside Philly on the Jersey side. You can be in CC Philadelphia in minutes via Patco.

I am not sure what your hub's commute would be but...just a suggestion!

GL!

I am at Upenn, too. And my husband works in NYC.
We live in west windsor, NJ. I take Amtrak to commute. It is around 1.5 hr door to door one way. I could read or work on Amtrak. So far, it works for us.

My son goes to Drexel and his best friend is at Penn. We live in SB and it's about 50 minutes drive. Easy train commute, too.
The whole area surrounding Princeton is a great option for younger homeowners.
