Any opinions about Allendale?

Schools, taxes, politics, NYC commute, etc?

We're looking at a few houses there & just wanted to see what everyone thought...

Thanks in advance.

It's a really nice, pretty suburb. Taxes are sky high. I think the high school kids go to Ramsey High??

No, the high school is Northern Highlands HS in Allendale- it's a regional HS and one of the best in the state

its a good town if you can afford it... I find it strange how their are a lot of mansions that cost 5-10 million and also regular 3 bedroom suburban houses in the same town when its so small

Oh, that's nothing...I saw over 70 houses in Ridgewood alone - that is after seeing 50+ in neighboring towns. My realtor probably hated me but at the end, it was worth it for her :-) Good Luck. You can't go wrong with any of those towns.

I really like Allendale. We saw couple of houses there that were great and we could get a lot more land in Allendale compared to Ridgewood (in the same price range). The reason we didn't pick Allendale was the commute. I remember having a very long discussion with my husband about him commute to the city (having been in Hoboken for 10 years, we knew that commute would be the biggest adjustment for him). So, we decided to draw a line at 45min on the train. We limited our search to towns that would bring him into the city in 45 min. So that his total door-to-door commute was no more than 1.15 min. So Allendale was out (I think its 50 or 55 min on a train). While its only 3 stops away from Ridgewood, 10 min here and 10 min there add up - especially if trains are running late. Also, we needed to narrow down our search somehow (since there are so many great towns in this area) and this was our criteria.
