Irvington is about the worst town in NJ..., BUT it is a thriving and active town. It's not a desolate wasteland and you would expect. I lived in Maple Garden while I saved money for a home. I saved enough money for a down payment on a house in only a year. In that time, I had a studio apartment, underground and above ground parking, a security gate and a 30 minute commute to my job in lower Manhattan. It was a means to an end. Each place is a stepping stone. Use Irvington for what it's good for: Cheap rent. The apartments in Maple Garden are safe. Don't walk the streets and own a car so that you can shop in Central NJ for groceries and such. That's what I did.
Very strange.
Different strokes but as much as Astoria is not for everyone- I have never heard anyone say they hated it and there are low income areas all over nyc.
