The outstanding thing about Wildwood is the width of the sand on the beach. It really is amazing.

Wildwood. I live in Burlington County too and take the back roads. Not sure if you can take them but here's what I use:

* New Lisbon to the Four Mile Circle (Rtes 70 & 72)
* Take Rte 72 South (only about 1/2 mi)
* Turn right on Route 563 South. Go through the towns of Chatsworth and Jenkins.
* Route 563 will split. Stay to your left and get onto Chatsworth Road. Follow every sign to New Gretna and the Garden State Parkway.
* At New Gretna, turn right onto Exit 9 of the Garden State Parkway.

On a good day, you can do this a little over an hour. On a busy day, could be an hour and a 1/2.

Oh yeah, don't take these backroads if you're not accustomed to driving through remote small towns, swamps, cranberry bogs, and thick forests. And I wouldn't recommend it at night either if you're not used to the road. If the moon isn't out, it is really dark out there and a person can get easily lost. And if you get lost, there won't be anyone around for miles to help you. Not to scare anyone! But it is great NJ scenary to enjoy and you'll miss the AC Expressway traffic.

I understand that sometime ago, beaches from North Jersey began losing sand because of some kind of erosion problem and the sand somehow was lifted and shifted onto Wildwood shores.

I believe their beach is over 2 miles long and 1/4 mile wide at its widest area. Visitors have commented on this area as "crossing a desert."

I understand that a vendor once proposed to offer camel rides from the boardwalk to the water!

I've always gone down to Cape May for a summer trip. It's one of the best beaches in the USA. However, it's gotten so expensive, and I am considering LBI this year. I've heard a lot of good things about that place as well.

Yeah but I don't think of Cape May as the Jersey Shore. It's too blandly upper crust. Of course I've never been there, so what do I know....

I'd go with Wildwood since the beaches are free and the surf is much calmer than up north. Also there are so many rooms to be had that it keeps the rental costs down. As far as boardwalks nothing else compares for sheer size and cleanliness and it's definately family friendly. In fact it doesn't have the same feel at all imo as the more northern places like Pt Pleasant or Seaside and that's why we've been going there reguarly for decades. Cape May is a 5 min drive away and stopping there for at least an hour or two is always part of our Wildwood trip.
