Sure. The train picks him up from your doorstep, and drops him off at his desk, right ?

Precisely. I don't know why people have such a complex and feel the need to severely underestimate the length of their commutes.

I don't think anyone who actually does the commute on a daily basis underestimates it (unless they are trying to sell their house, and therefore are willing to say anything in the hopes of attracting buyers to their towns).

I think most people who spout off about their towns being "30 minutes to Manhattan" in terms of commuting are people who blissfully live their daily lives on the west side of the Hudson River, and rarely make the trip into NYC. So it really is just the uninformed.

It is very easy to let the mind slip into thinking that "commute time" = "train time" which is dangerous when giving advice. Granted, the train is the majority of the time spent commuting, but there is still a fair 20-30% of the time spent getting from home-->train and train-->work.

BUDGET ?

Well if you're taking a train then Bergen County is out because i don't think there's a train that runs into Bergen County from NYC.

The Bergen county train lines are pascack, bergen, and main. They all dump into Hoboken via Secaucus. The commuter can either catch a path train from hoboken or catch a NY-Penn bound train from Secaucus.

Actually, the top five in bergen, according to the nj monthly list are:

Tenafly, Glen Rock, Northern Highlands regional (allendale, ho-ho-kus, upper saddle river, saddle river), Pascack Hills (montvale + woodcliff lake), and Cresskill.

If you add another 15 minutes to the commute you can also look at South Brunswick, Montgomery and, of course, Princeton for excellent schools.
