You could live anywhere on the River Line Riverton, Palmyra Cinnaminson, Delran, etc. Property taxes are going to be lower in Burlington County.
You're from Indiana? Camden would be equivalent to Gary.

He's correct but I recommend looking in Collingswood, or even better, Haddon Township on the Patco train line. Taxes in those towns are not prohibitive and both are good investments. If schools are an issue HT's are better in my opinion.

I doubt we'd have to live in Camden, unless there is something we don't know about. We have two cars, but were hoping to sell one of them before we move, unless we need it.
We would prefer to own, but could potentially rent if we found an affordable apartment with no pet restrictions. Our budget for and apartment would be $2000, but if we could find one for less than$1000, that'd be great. Our home budget would be around $150,000, but would love to get one cheaper if possible. I'm making assumptions on prices; I don't know what type of job I'd be able to find. I also haven't looked into whether banks would even be willing to give a home loan to us with my starting a new job in that time period. Obviously some of the student loans could be used toward rent/mortgage, but I'd like to cover most of it with my salary.
I've kind of been comparing Camden to Gary, indiana, but even Gary has some not-so-scary parts. I've heard; I've never been there.

$2,000/month rent would translate to a lot more than $150K purchase. At 2,000/month, you'd be looking at roughly $275K-300K, including property taxes. Unless you have no money to put down.
Not sure if you are aware of this.

Yeah, for $150K, that'd probably rule out Cherry Hill and Haddonfield, although you may be able to find something in Haddon Township, Lindenwold, or maybe Collingswood.

Atco or Berlin are close by to everything in Camden County. The bus # 554 can take you to and from the Patco stations.

Yeah, we could afford to go higher on a house, but we're not going for a big house or anythind extravagant. We have no children and are not planning on having any until he's done with school. We're probably not staying in the immediate area when he's done, so we just need something big enough for us and the pups. As long as it has at least two bedrooms and a yard that is fenced or could be fenced easily, that's fine. It could even be a fixer, as I'm going to have a lot of free time, seeing as I'm not going to see my husband much for the next three years.
Does anyone know anything about any pit bull bans or restrictions in the area?

I want to commend the posters in this thread for being sensible. No one posted anything along the lines of "Camden? OMG!!! you'll get shot as soon as you walk into town!!!"
Katisu...I hope you are aware that RU-C will give your husband in-state tuition if you sign a one-year lease. If you haven't heard about this, please check it out.

That is part of the its appeal to us. Most of the others are private schools, so that won't be an option. Some of them did give decent scholarships that would help make up for it. There are still a couple of schools that we haven't heard from yet as well.
I also appreciate everyone not scaring us away from rutgers. My husband has been talking about living in surrounding towns, but I was leaning toward living in Camden. Maybe I'm stupid or reckless, but I'm still considering Camden. I'm not sure that he'd let that happen, though. It just seems easier to live closer to school and work. And it's cheaper- because it's crappier. But cheap is cheap and I want the student loans to be as cheap as possible. Maybe it's
because I've never lived outside of small to medium-sized towns, but it almost seems like a welcome change.
Ultimately, safety will have to be a top concern, though. If we won't be relatively safe in Camden, it won't be an option.

You can be in Camden around Rutgers, that area is OK, but I recommend Collingswood or Haddon Twp.
