Yep. Make a quarter mile buffer around the campus. The area just off Admiral Wilson Blvd is like you said, ok, but this is the CBD. South of Cooper St (some would argue Mickle Blvd) is a whole nother ball game.

That data is incorrect. New Orleans is the most dangerous city in the US.

Camden can now brag about being #2! I think they actually went as low as #4. But seriously, I've driven New Orleans and Camden, and I don't see how anything quite measures up to what I've seen in Camden. Well, maybe Juarez Mexico.

That may be, but crime is down in Camden. The initiatives put in place are working and we are starting to see major investment in the waterfront which will benefit the city greatly.

This: When the house next door is abandoned: a photo essay. - By Camilo Jose Vergara - Slate Magazine might help to give you some visuals. Granted, the topic of the essay is guaranteed to give a particular view of the city, but I think it says a lot.

I would agree with those who say that you should consider other ares before thinking about living in Camden itself.

My sister in law works in Camden and lives in Medford, but that might be a little far if you're looking into public transit to there/Philly. Still, the towns other posters have mentioned are all good places to start looking, and your budget seems pretty realistic.

Not all of Camden is bad. The Fairview and Waterfront areas of Camden are very nice.

Dear Katisu,
You've received many good suggestions so far. May I add another? I lived in Pennsauken near the Merchantville border while I was in medical school. It was an easy commute to Cooper Hosp in Camden, and pretty easy to hop into Philadelphia when we needed to. We met many nice neighbors, too. Best of luck on your decision!

Ha. Tulane is one of the schools we haven't heard from yet.

Those last few links were really interesting. The one about the paired homes was sad, but very interesting. I really enjoyed the one about the profs living in Camden.

Thank you so much. You what I'm really enjoying? You guys are helpful. One of my fears is that we'll move somewhere where all the people are rude and mean. If you're any indicator of what we can expect from new jersey, I think we'll like it.
