FYI 150 thousand is doable in Palmyra, and you'd have the Light Rail right there, that drops you off right in front of Rutgers and has an easy transfer to the Patco line.
Small Cape Cod or Twin, but definatley do able... check zip code 08065

I think some of you are spit shining Camden a little bit. I have 2 friends who are Camden cops, that place is a disaster. My buddy got mugged standing in line for books at Rutgers.

Thanks!
I was looking into apartments online. The only ones in the area that I could find that allowed dogs was in Voorhees. Any thoughts?
Mugged in line for books! That's a little disheartening.

Voorhees is a great area, although I'd think it might be on the upper end of your price range, if in it at all.
I don't think anyone answered your pitbull question either, and I'm not totally sure, but as far as I know there are no laws against pitbulls in NJ.

Awesome. I would sooner commute a long distance than ever consider giving up my dogs.
The apt I found in Voorhees was actually fairly affordable and claimed they had no pet restrictions whatsoever on their website, so that may be an option. As far as buying in Voorhees, I doubt we could do it.

That's not even that long of a distance to commute. It'd be about a half hour drive to Rutgers, and maybe a little over an hour total to get to Philly using the PATCO line, which isn't bad at all (I think Ashland would be the closest station?). That's not much farther than where I live - my mom works at Rutgers and my dad works in Center City, so I know your situation . I'd tell you where I live as an option but it's kinda hard to explain, my town doesn't really have a name; my mailing address is Laurel Springs (zip code 08021), but I don't really live in Laurel Springs, I guess the closest actual town would probably be Blackwood (08012), so those may be a couple more options that should be cheaper than Voorhees and a little closer to Camden and Philly, but aren't as nice of an area (still fine though).

Never resort to Camden.
Camden is probably the most rundown ghetto in this country.
I heard Woodbury is nice.. Diverse, nice, cheap town. It's a great commute to both Camden and Philly.
i don't know much about that particular area except Woodbury because i have a friend who lived there. I thought it was a nice small town.

If you can afford $2,000/month for an apartment, you can afford more than $150,000 for a house. I can't think of any decent area where you can get a house for $150K. Sure, you can buy in Camden for that, but trust all of us - you don't want to live in Camden.
If you don't have a lot of money saved for a downpayment on a purchase, I would suggest finding a nice rental in or around Collingswood or Westmont for $1000/month or so and saving as much as you can for awhile so you can buy a house in a couple years. You'll want to shoot for at least $200K for a starter home, maybe closer to $300 these days.

I tend to "spitshine" Nj's urban areas a little bit, because there will be ten people who have barely ever set foot in them who will make asinine comments like "every square inch of Camden is hell on earth". I think the OP understands that, as a whole, Camden is a dangerous city. That does not mean that there are not great places within the city, though. Especially since the OP does not have children, she might be able to find a place that is right for her in Camden.
