Awesome. Thanks. I have a feeling that if we do move there, and mr. husband doesn't want to move too far away after school, that I would want to stay there. Something about all the links you guys have given me, good or bad, is drawing me in. I hope he chooses Rutgers. And I hope if he does that we would find an area in which we felt safe. Obviously, if we didn't feel safe we wouldn't live there, but I really hope we do. Maybe I'm a sucker for proving that things with bad reputations aren't what they seem. If anyone told me to my face that my pit bull was a "dangerous" breed I would probably punch them. (not really. I'm terrified of confrontation.) And then my dog would waggle over to him and lick his face off. Nothing is ever as good or as bad as it's reputation.

I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong. I'd like to see it for myself and get a feel of it, though.

Well....its just that you seem to display such exuberance when extolling the virtues of paradice living in Camden one only assumes that you can't wait to move there yourself ? Surely this great city you describe must be a step up from Collingswood or you would have suggested the OP move there instead ?

Nobody ever said "everyone" in Camden was a criminal. (Is that the brand of journalism you practice? Misquoting people to push your agenda?) However, "everyone" who lives in Camden is certainly at risk to be a victim at the hands of those who are criminals, of which there is no shortage of in Camden.

Well, don't move into the actual city of Camden. Move to the outskirts.

Oh my God some of you need a(nother) hobby.

Camden isn't a safe place, we've established that. The crime there is out of control, you're not safe (again).

Katisu, here are your choices:

a. Investigate areas to live on the outskirts of Camden, not just Camden City.

b. If you can't find anywhere outside of Camden to live, move to the nicer area near the University.

If you do choose to move to Camden, there is a risk that you will be a victim of a violent crime. Here are some self-protection tips: use common sense when entering and exiting the area. Lock your house. Always. Lock your car, always. If someone approaches your car at a red light and pulls a gun, drive away. Have a fire drill in place in case someone breaks into your house. If someone tries to abduct you, fight like hell and run away (don't let them). The two worst types of crimes are abductions and home invasions. If you have a proactive plan in place to deal with either of the two attempts, you will most likely survive. Look like you know where you are going at all times (not a tourist). Walk tall and stand like you can handle yourself. You most likely won't be a victim of a violent crime unless you are involved in the drug game. Otherwise, it's a crap shoot. Don't be paranoid, just be prepared and when your significant other is done with school, move to the 'burbs.

I don't think what you have said is out of line. If a mostly poor and violent neighborhood has new people moving in that carry expensive equipment around, they may assume we would be a good target. I'm not so much stereotyping the residents of Camden, but I'm saying the ones that are violent may stereotype us as people with "nice" things. I'm not saying we do, just that they may get that idea.

I don't think race would be the issue (unless there is something we don't know about), but maybe how we present ourselves- clothing, lap-top, purses, etc.
Wow, you may as well wear a sign that says "Rob Me"
