Okay, I have lived in Wayne since July 2002. My husband and I both worked in NYC (he still does). I am going to be brutally honest and don't care what peoples responses are. Wayne is a great place to live, great shopping, convenient to major highways, good schools, a good value for your money. However, the commute to NYC is not an easy one. My husband takes the bus from Hamburg and Valley to Port Authority everyday. It is always an hour ride (don't listen to the schedule they post, it's never right). There are times of the year it is shorter, for instance the summer months. The train runs very infrequently (I think around every 30 minutes) and is not express. It too takes about 50-60 minutes to Hoboken. I'm just being honest. I wish I had asked before moving here although I like the town and now it's only 1 of us doing the long commute. Good luck!

There are too many variables on what makes the commute a short or a long one. From what time you leave to start your commute to the Mercy of the Weather & Traffic Gods.

I applaud your honesty! I'm living in Jersey City, but considering a move further out.
One thing that occurred to me pretty early on, is that when I asked from people who actually did the commute, I got very different answers. Even if you had asked, there is no guarantee you would have got honest answers. For whatever reason, everyone wants to advocate their home town, and in doing so, they exaggerate (or lie) about commuting times.
Thankfully, a couple of honest commuters stepped forward and saved me from sticking myself with a 2hr commute.
Having said that, I think to be in a decent suburb in NJ, you're going to have a 75-90 minute commute (door-to-desk)

Thank you Rama. This is the type of answer people need!
My husband communtes from Nutley to 5th Ave/60th. For him it's about 60-70 minutes each way, door to desk. I usually drop him off at the express bus stop in Rutherford in the morning, so you can't argue he wasted time on local buses. With this, it's about 10 minutes from home to bus stop, 30-40 minutes on bus, another 15-20 minutes walk/subway.
So it doesn't make sense for some to tell people commute by transit from Wayne is within one hour, except for those who works inside of the bus terminal!

A good tradeoff IMO
It really does depend on the time of day you make the trip. My husband has been commuting from Wayne, NJ into Port Authority since 2003 (making the 7 am train in the morning and the 6 pm train in the evening) and I cannot recall a time it took him longer than one hour to get home or into the city in the morning. The dedicated bus lanes really make the trip easier than driving. (and now there is that new train/bus station on 23, so check that out too) If you have a family, moving further out makes for a more of a suburban than urban lifestyle for your kids. I grew up in Bergen County and it is getting very congested, schools are over crowded and the demographics are changing. I left there to move to Wayne when I began hearing mention of guns in the high school. I think in 2007 Money Magazine rated Wayne, NJ the safest city in the US. Plus, the schools are top notch (both of my children graduated Wayne school systems and went on to graduate from a couple of good colleges - so did their friends - and both are gainfully employed) and there's lots of shopping and restaurants. And, if you crave a little urban life, just hop a bus for the city. We occasionally make a jaunt in to see a show and have a meal on a weekend and the bus ride is a breeze. (It's also great to be so close to some of the best medical facilities in the world, like Sloan Kettering if, God forbid, you ever need cancer care) Totally worth it, IMO. And, I don't have a mcmansion, just an average, comfortable three bedroom home where I still reside. It's a decent life.
