Please choose Chatham or for that matter Madison is a good choice as well. I don't think Summit is the town for you. It may work for your wife, but you need a town like Chatham. Don't consider Short Hills as there are way too many Asians and Italians for you I would think.
Summit is one of the nicest towns ive ever been in, you always hear about things that are bad with a town, you're never going to get a town with no problems, but summit is very close to having no problems, as far as gangs..if there are any which I doubt very very much...they are not serious at all especially if they live in Summit, really Summit is like perfect suburbia
Chatham and Summit are both decent upscale towns--you're right Summitt is a bit more diverse. Really not much "gang activity" but other posters shouldn't be laughing--gangs do have an increasing presence in the morris county area (summit borders), believe it or not, particularly in morristown but also in madison, chatham, etc. Not widespread and you probably wouldn't see anything but there are instances of gang-related activity.
I would agree with Chatham being a beautiful area with a high percentage of the Caucasian persuasion but if you have an open mind, can hold your own and not easily succumbed by what other people think, living there shouldn't be a problem. Personally, I have not encountered the "snootiness" as someone mentioned earlier. I made a few friends while living there and if you meet us, that would be the least adjective you would use to describe us.
As far as housing choices, if you are thinking of moving into an apartment and you have searched this forum, you may have already seen Chatham Hill Apartments Shocker If not, you may want to take a look. My suggestion would be to avoid any place run by Home Properties. I have enhanced the feedback post from a former tenant so that it can be read easily on the forum.
This is also an example of situations and goings-on in a place that you would least expect.
