My husband is beginning his third year of Med school and has been placed in Patterson, NJ. We don't want to live in Patterson as we have heard it's not the greatest in terms of safety. However, we need to be 20-30 minutes away as he will be working 80-100 hour weeks, so we need somewhere close to Patterson, where I can easily access transportation into NYC. So far we have heard Clifton, Montclair, Passaic, might be good options.
In terms of what type of town we are looking for, I would like something that has come kind of downtown, is diverse, maybe areas that you can walk around, not too suburban or strip-mall"ish"( I am a city girl at heart).

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer us!
Scratch Passaic off your list for starters. Clifton & Montclair are good options w/ access to Bus & Train to NYC but Clifton downtown's is not the greatest but it is definetely diverse. Montclair would be your best option out of the 3.
nyc isnt exactly the same as brooklyn. i would probably be looking to live in a place like clark, nj. let the husband ride up the parkway and you can take the goethels over to SI then Verazano to BK.
Thanks for the suggestions all. Yes, NJ to Brooklyn is not going to be fun no matter what, but I'll have to suck it up for a bit...so at least living somewhere which is not total suburbia can lessen the pain. I welcome any other suggestions.
