my husband is considering a move to NY. he would be working in midtown manhattan. I am at home with a 3 year old and have another on the way. I am looking for a nice, safe area with good schools. since I have 2 dogs, a condo won't work. Oh, he's a journalist, so his salary will be reasonable, not great.
we can buy at around $500K. but with the taxes/utility bills I keep hearing about, anything else is too risky.
Oh, and I don't want to live too far out from the city. Can I get this in NJ?
p.s. can someone tell me why NY people have nothing but negatives to say about NJ? I've lived in the DC area most of my life, so I don't really have that paradigm.
Actually the DC area has much of the same provincialism/regionalism -- just think about how many people in Maryland talk badly about Virginia (redreck, all sprawl, boring), and how Virginia people talk badly about Maryland (high taxes, dislike of PG county, etc). Not to mention how DC people often talk about cringeing about having to live in suburbia, while people in VA & MD say how they would never want to live in DC.

any help would be appreciated.
outside of NYC that you could call home. I'm sure someone on this site can offer you some help. I've been out of the loop for over 2 years, so sorry that I can't be of more help. I love Jersey - used to live there; moved out because of my financial situation. But I'll be back in a heartbeat when I can. NY just thinks they are better than us -- they think we are NY wannabees!!!!! Some areas I like best are Morristown, Westfield, Peapack-Gladstone, Long Valley, Summit, Berkely Heights. You can check out some of those. Best of luck to you.
Half of New Jersey is people who moved here from New York, so I can't imagine why NY'ers badmouth NJ. I wish the NY people would go back to NY. lol I think downtownjc is 100% right.

I was one of those new yorkers that used to think of jersey the way the wicked stepmother thought of cinderella, I moved to Rahway NJ 9 years ago and i have no regrets. At first it was hard getting to sleep (too quite ) but i got used to it quick. NJ has a lot to offer and also has a lot of towns like Raway that have an easy commute into the city .

When I lived in NJ, the reverse was true. Now, if only I could marry the best of NY & NJ !
(You won't be making a mistake with your move to NJ)
