Trying to move into Nutley/Bloomfield area, help!
I'm a college student at MSU and I'm trying to find a cheap studio apartment. Unfortunately, this NJ and most of the studio apts in the area are $900. Orange seems to be pretty inexpensive, but I know East Orange isn't the best area to live in...anyone have any suggestions? Also, the Scotland Rd/Ivy Hill area safe ish? Seton Hall is pretty close by so I figured it wouldn't be too bad.
Any suggestion is welcomed!

It all depends on what you have been exposed to. With that said, I would recommend to stay away from Scotland rd a friend of ours who was attending Seaton Hall at the time got rob outside her apartment. And in the 90's a few friends were robbed at gunpoint and one was pistol whipped pretty badly on the head. However it didn’t happen on Scotland Rd. just two blocks away.
just remember, Inexpensive can lure some undesirables

Try www.craigslist.com
Belleville and bloomfield have apt for under $800.00.

Hi. I've lived in the area most of my life, so here's a brief overview:
Inexpensive and safe towns: Bloomfield, Totowa, West Paterson, Clifton, Lincoln Park
Expensive and safe towns: Nutley, Little Falls, Wayne, Upper Montclair
Tip: Best to look in the towns local newspaper for apt. listings than the Star Ledger.

I wouldn't suggest Scotland Rd. That's just me, though.

the first apartment i ever rented was in FOREST HILLS PROPERTIES in bloomfield with my sister.. i've lived in edison (too far for an MSU student) and newark since then.. and after listening to the sound of gun shots and a crazy landlord in newark.. i decided to come back to Forest Hills.. they have studios for 795 with heat included.. it's a great neighborhood.. parking can be an issue.. but if you can find a roommate they have 2 bdrm duplexes that come with 3 floors.. a basement which includes it's own washer dryer.. the first flr that has the living room, dining room and kitchen and the top floor.. with 1 large bedroom, a small but decent 2nd bedroom and a bath.. plenty of storage space in the basement and an attached garage (which really helps the parking situation).. i'd give the place my stamp of approval `=)

As a college student, I would always share a multi-bedroom apartment with other students, because it made economic sense. If your budget is $800 or less, you will have much better options if you take this route.

There's a lot of multi family housing in Montclair. Check out the Valley Rd area.

Agree with staying away from Scotland Road. I lived in South Orange and worked in Orange right off Scotland Road for a while and it is not a safe area. Also stay away from Ivy Hill.
It sounds like others have some alternatives to Orange and I think you should definitely consider them.
