Funny, as an old architecture buff, some of the nicest homes I've seen have been in places such as Newark and Trenton - from when those towns really were the centers of wealth in the State. One home sold in Newark not so long ago that had belonged to Louis Comfort Tiffany. Absolutely stunning detail. In another location would have been worth millions.
Outside of that, Mountain Lakes has some real beauties, as does the Bernardsville/Far Hills area.
Not a fan of 90% of the homes produced in the last 20 years.
Best homes and best address in NJ is anything on Lamington road in Bedminster. Trump doesn't build golf courses just anyplace and he used the property that once belonged to John De Lorean on Lamington Rd. for his only NJ golfcourse.
I like old historics, so I would have to say Oradell, Hackensack, Old Tappan, Montclair and of course #1 Ridgewood!
USR also has some beautiful homes!
I'm surprised you mentioned Hackensack.
People really underestimate Hackensack overall as being Central, Main and
First street ONLY.. But Summit Ave has some of the most beautiful homes in all of Bergen county, Spring valley is another part of Hackensack that has beautiful homes, and that goes into Maywood aswell.. The homes have that older architect that just get you in awe.
Examples (These are all in Hackensack)

Yep, that is the street I was talking about! Alot of those homes are now commercial property, law offices, etc. They are beautiful though. Thanx for posting the pics. I know all those homes. Drove on that road thousands of times!
That first pic was always one of my favorites with that wrap around porch!
A Mountain Lakes Hapgood that's on the market right now:
Thanks for posting. Those Plainfield homes are absolutely outstanding.
North Plainfield (as well as the aforementioned Newark,Trenton and East Orange) are three of the towns I point to whenever people mention "good" towns and "bad" towns. Those homes are testimony to what used to be and how we can never be sure of anything.
Tewksbury and Oldwick in Hunterdon County have beautiful homes.
