I live 35 miles from downtown Atlanta, so there were plenty of opportunities for me- the same could not be said if I moved to Adel, GA, which is out in the middle of nowhere.

There are areas of NC, GA, FL, etc., that are extremely affordable, but they only work if you're ready to retire, and there are other places that are affordable and offer plenty of job opportunities (in most economies...). The same can be said for portions of NJ that aren't located within a reasonable commute to NYC, Philly, or any of the big employment hubs.

Cape May County comes to mind immediately. Not a lot of high 5 and 6 figure salary jobs to had within reasonable commuting distance, unless you are a shift manager at Trump Plaza.

Is it reasonable to say that NJ's proximity to so many urban areas makes it more likely, on average, to be a higher-salaried place to work?

Could this be why so many have that opinion or have that experience in their own life?

While I may have stretched the truth a little the facts remain that New Jersey IS the mosty heavily taxed state of all 50.....that just doesn't change......so the bottom line is that you could move most anywhere and live cheaper than in New Jersey.

For you Tahiti, it's not worth it. Lets try my scenario. Prop. taxes almost 16K. I don't have my NJ taxes in hand but I pay all year then send an additonal check. My house here can be bought in Florida right now for 3 or 4 times less in price. I can buy a beautiful house in Florida for about 200K with prop. taxes about 3K. No state income taxes on proceeds from pension(someday) and dividends. When I die the Florida does not take a nickel. For you it makes sense but for many in NJ they are being robbed, clubbed, mugged and out and out hijacked every minute of the day. All they do in Trenton is devise ways of taxing us to death. They never heard of cutting spending and taxes. I mean every year they constantly raise taxes on every aspect of our life. And the common response is" It's NJ what do you expect. I can write pages on mismanagement on the state level and most towns and cities are just as bad. Go to realtor.com and just about every town or city in Florida has homes that are 3 or 4 bedroom, 2 or 3 baths for 100 to 200K.

I see the pull for retirees and I understand that. My post was to dispel the myth that moving out of state is advantageous *for everyone*.

You cry about what you can get in Florida. Not being snarky, but seriously, why not move? What are you waiting for? Is it the fact that you rely on the NJ taxpayer to pay your 6 figure salary and, when you retire, your nearly 6 figure pension?

I'm not crying about what you can get in Florida I'm just throwing it out there. I'll take the hit about crying about taxes. About 80 percent of the posters fit in that category. The first and probably only thing that is keeping us in NJ is family. And no my pension won't be 6 figures. That figure is for chiefs and dep. chiefs.(only if I studied)

I wrote something about this subject (families and closeness) and how I think it is more regionalized in the northeast US in a thread in the general forum:

http://www.city-data.com/forum/8569033-post69.html

If you read through this thread, you see what I mean. Lots of people who live close to their birthplace are from the northeast. Where I live now, it's not that way at all. Everyone (anyone who is Anglo anyway), and I mean everyone, is from somewhere else.
