Hirams.....Wow!
My Dad owned a bar in Fort Lee many years ago and when we were little he would take us to Hirams. I also remember going to Palidsades Amusement Park and having the fries in paper cones with vinegar! Dating myself too! I was very little then!
Also before I made my move to Florida I would frequent Houstons at the RiverSide Square Mall.....their ribs are to die for! Great food, nice atmosphere. There is one down here in Winter Park but I have not gone yet.
Cheescake Factory has below par food but there cheescake is phenominal!

Indeed I do! What a shame that place is gone. I've been away from NJ too long! One thing you'll never hear me criticize NJ for is diversity of food.

restaurant nicholas is on my list of places to visit. this and the ryland inn consistently flip flop for the best food in the entire state. i've been to the ryland and it's outstanding. one thing the ryland inn has over restaurant nicholas is location - the grounds are gorgeous.

I heard wonderful things about that place. While the food is excellent as you said, is it true that the portions are skimpy?

tahiti, you must go.... It is so incredibly good. The tasting menu will make you think you've gone to heaven. The service there is crazy too--I've never seen anything like it. Impeccable. Those factors make you forget you're right on Route 35.
I've heard great things about Ryland Inn, but we're only 20-25 minutes from Nicholas and love it. When we're going to drop $300+ on a meal, we want a sure thing.

No... If you do the tasting menu, you'll go out stuffed. The regular three course menu would fill up most people.

we did the tasting menu at ryland's and i'm sure it's the same - so unbelieveably good, the wine parings were outstanding, but you didn't feel bloated even though you consumed an enormous amount of food, kwim? btw - our meal for 4 at ryland cost $1K (thank god for rich relatives! LOL)
the service i'm sure is similar too - completely attentive, but NOT in your face, it's like they appeared out of nowhere, right?
it's funny, because i work 5 minutes from there (rest. nicholas), yet live 60 miles. so it's easy to go right from work, but hubby would have meet me, and we'd have to drive separately home. i WILL get there though!
