Don't turn it back around.

They did a study a while back and found that most violent crime is between people that already know each other in some way.

And for most of THOSE, that "some way" was family or friends.

So, for someone NEW to a town, moving in, a more accurate assessment of THEIR safety would be the number of crimes (muggings, killings, auto theft, whatever) that had no other associations.

If I move in there and know nobody, what are the chances of me being the victim?

AC had a crime rating of 1389 in '99 but only 100 annual car thefts compared to Newarks 8,000. That's the highest I ever heard anywhere.

Crime catagories really vary by city.
Actually all of class four has some very dangerous sections. I mean I did the research, I placed each one higher than the next based on doing the math, and I know some of those areas. Just cuz a town doesnt seem bad, and you feel safe walking through, or because nothing has happened to you or someone you know, doesnt mean it doesnt happen. I lived on the border of Rahway and Linden for four years, I know what goes on there. There are nice homes, safe to walk around, shop, do whatever. But if you walk in the wrong part of rahway at night you could get mugged, possibly worse, its happened. I didnt want to place any town on the list based on my opinion, I did the research and its in the right spot on the list.

No, not all.

And that is the question, or the qualifier that needs to be used.

As a new resident, or as a complete stranger walking through any part of town (with REASONABLE intelligence that is) what is the likelyhood of being assaulted?

How safe is the town if your brother is NOT a dealer? If your Hubby is not an abusive individual? How safe would it be for me to live there?

I am not disqualifying any of the rankings being posted here but lets put it this way. After 14 years in Hoboken, the only time I was attacked was by a yuppie coming home from a bar.

That is after walking alone through the warehouse district at night, and past the projects in the daytime quite a few times. After walking up the ramp up the palisades to visit friends at the Doric.

The most unsafe time I had was at the hands of someone that did not even live in Hoboken!

So the question is, is Hoboken as unsafe as your survey says, or is it just another statistical abnormality that would not directly apply to someone just moving in?

Hi there,

So, where to move in NJ? We're relocating to NJ in a month due to a job change and we are still with very mixed feelings... The job is located very close to Princeton and we would prefer to not commute for more than an hour. Help!

I think it's clear -- the answer is Trenton!

Just kidding ...

All of the surrounding area's I believe are fine except for obviously Trenton, New Brunswick aint all that great either. There are alot of little towns around that area that are nice, the larger towns or cities that are nice....hmmm Try East Brunswick or Old Bridge, no problems there.

well those are all great questions, I would say the only towns that are threatening to an outsider, or just being a victim of some random violence would be anything obviously on my CLASS 4 or CLASS 5 without a doubt, some possibly on CLASS 3, anything below that has problems that are just unusual for a small town or that they are above the average when it comes to crimes
