After long extensive research of looking at FBI reports, crime reports, Crime stats online, and knowing the area's here it is after doing the math.


CLASS 5 - Very Dangerous Area Overall, High Poverty, Very High Violent/Property Crime, Very High Drug Sales, High to Very High Murder Rate

CLASS 4 -Dangerous Area Overall, Mild Poverty, High Violent/Property Crime, Very High Drug Sales, High Murder Rate

CLASS 3 - Dangerous Area, Very Dangerous Sections Of the Neighborhood. Mild to High Violent/Property Crime, High Drug Sales, Mild to High Murder Rate

CLASS 2 - Potentially Dangerous, Dangerous sections of the neighborhood, Mild Violent/Property Crime, Mild to High Drug Sales, Small to Mild Murder Rate

CLASS 1 - Above State Average Violent/Property Crime, Mild to High Drug sales, No to Small Murder Rate, Sections of neighborhood may be dangerous.

I work and live in downtown newark... haven't gotten shot or robbed once.

It's amazing that you think you can classify an entire city just based on the city's boundaries. Jersey City is "Class 5"? Sure, there are parts of Jersey City that deserve that classification, but there are also areas that are extremely safe. Glad you invested all of the time into producing this highly useful list......

True I always dodge bullets from the indian store owners on Newark Ave in Jersey City.

.....lol im just gunna say, you dont know Jersey city well then, the average murder rate in Jersey City is higher than east orange, EO has higher crime, but more murders take place in JC, city-data.com alone will show you, just look up info on both towns.

I think the point is, you can't classify an entire city with just one number.

I do find this list to be useful. Of course, even in the most dangerous cities, there are some areas that are safe. That really does not mean that the city is not dangerous; it just means that the city has some safe areas mixed in with dangerous ones.

On the whole, let's face it -- Jersey City is one of the most dangerous cities in NJ. That is not a stereotype nor a perception. It's a fact!
