LOL, yes, that's what I used to do when I lived in Charlotte. Just remember, it's not called a BBQ, it's a "cookout".

OK, here's one other suggestion, but it's not unique to NJ, and it IS a chain restaurant, but an upscale one...
Houston's. I think they have one of the absolute best cheeseburgers I've ever had. And the fries they serve with them are superb - thin shoestrings cooked perfectly. But the burgers are honestly incredible. I think they use a brioche bun, and a good one at that, which just adds to it; but it comes down to the fact that they use very good beef, which is unusual for a chain restaurant.
Try it sometime. It's a bit pricey, but try it for lunch one day, if you get the chance.

if you are in Union County. Joe's Place on Morris Ave in Union makes a mean burger. They have a nice selection of different types and have a daily special.

Barnacle bills is very good. I would also recommend Jakes in Ocean, NJ
if you want to try a chain there is always BOBBY's Burger Place. (bobby flay's burger joint at the monmouth mall.. in the parking lot)

My two favorite burger joints have been closed for a long time now. Maggie's in the Livingston Mall, and Don's (also in the town of Livingston). Even though formerly Don's Restaurant, formerly formerly Don's Drive-in, is closed you can still get Don's burgers in a few stores in the area, but they are expensive and you have to grill them yourself.
I do like the burgers at Star Tavern in Orange, The Landmark in Livingston, and Joe's American Grill in Short Hills too.
