Rutgers employees are part of the PERS program, which many state employees participate in. I don't know what the % is that they get upon retirement, but I find it hard to imagine that it'd be 50% of your salary.

I'm also thinking that there may not be a lot of hiring going on at Rutgers at the moment, considering that the first two lines on their Human Resources page are:

Layoff Information for Deans and Managers

and

Layoff Information for Employees

Unless you have a connection there, you can pretty much forget about it. That's what I was told directly from someone that works in career services at RU.

Being an alum apparently means little either. I've applied many times for jobs which I'm been very well qualified for and never gotten a sniff.

Throw in the fact that there is an ongoing major budget crunch at the school ...bottom line is it's probably best to look elsewhere for employment.

When I worked there (research faculty), I had a plan similar to a 401k.

Unless you can get a really big pay hike, you're probably better off with the plan you have.

RU is laying off a lot of people. I take a night class there and one of the marketing managers just got his pink slip last week.

current economic climate aside, my brother works there and got in on his own merit - zero connections.

it's always worth a try, but i do also hear from him there's minimal hiring.

I guess it depends on the department, the desirability of the job, when he got hired, etc.

There are obviously going to be examples like your brother...my point was that at a place like RU, being well-connected goes a long way.
