Which town is better - Rutherford or Hasbrouck Heights?
We're considering moving to NJ and have looked at houses in both Rutherford and Hasbrouck Heights. We have seen nice houses in both areas and wanted to get an insider's perspective as to which town you feel is better as far as schools systems (Elementary fror now) and other thoughts you have have as well. I'm leaning towards Rutherford because of the nice town area, just the feel of it seems more comfortable. How does the property taxes compare?
Distance wise to the city, they're pretty much the same, with Rutherford a few miles closer.
Any thoughts or comments are appreciated!
Thank you!

Rutherford is a growing area. Hasbrouck Heights property taxes are esacatling every year (feels more like every month!) HH school system used to be great but today is not as great. Classrooms are getting overcrowded and the curriculum is not as challenging as it used to be. I'm not sure about the Rutherford curriculum but have heard positive comments about it. Hope that helps somewhat.

Rutherford vs. Hasbrouck Heights
Thanks for the reply. Out of curiousity, how do you know about the cirriculum not being as challenging? From the school stats that I found on various web sites, the scoring on state standardized tests are pretty much the same or very close.
From what we've seen so far, the property taxes seem pretty close as well.
Is "Blvd" the main street in Hasbrouck Hts? is that the street that goes though the center of town where all the shops etc are on?
Thank you!

I work in Rutherford but I've been living in hasbrouck hts for about six years and is a great and safe town. The school system is one of the best in the state. Our school won the Governor's Excellence Award two years in a row, so that's says alot about a school system. About the Boulevard, yes that's our main street and about the taxes they are comparable to any suburban town in bergen county. Being a realtor I made my homework when it came to my kids education and believe me I made the right choice in moving to Hasbrouk Heights.

I went to High School in Has Hgts and it was an excellent school. HH is a tiny, safe, pleasant town. There are a ton of cops. Walking home from school (all of 6 blocks), I would literally pass TEN cops patrolling. Boulevard is the main street, with a bunch of little stores and restaurants. There were never any major problems in school (I don't think there was a fight or anything like that the entire time I was there).
HH has no bad area. Everyone there has been there forever, and they all know each other. I would check out all the small towns in the area whenever you decide to take the trek here, but HH would be a great choice. I know the area pretty well, so feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions. Good luck!

Rutherford is the way to go
I live in Hasbrouck Heights. I am trying to get out and go to Monmouth County. Hasbrouck heights is no longer the great town it used to be. The schools suck. The high school has always been bad, but it is even worse and underfunded now. The only reason Lincoln Elementary got Governor's School of Excellence is because of the special education program. They give more attention, time, and money to special ed students and smarter students that need it. High school has racial problems and lots of fights. The taxes are high, the lots are small, and crime has elevated, like the taxes. "Strange" people are always moving in and out of the apartments, and yet another sex offender has moved the Hasbrouck Heights. The superintendent of schools is more concerned about raising funds and support for the football team than ensuring students a good quality education. He just received a new three year contract. Expect nothing to change anytime soon. However, Mayor Rose Heck is a wonderful woman that is trying to change the town by lowering taxes and bringing back conservative government, but the damage has been done by the previous Jones Administration.rutherford also has high taxes, but better schools, nicer homes and areas, trains to NYC, views of NYC, and is a better overall neighborhood good for raising children.

Property taxes aren't that bad in Hasbrouck Heights. They are much higher in Rutherford. Both are two of the better towns in South Bergen County.

I think it depends on what your priority is. I think ?Hasbrouck Heights has the edge when it comes to raising a family.

I live in Rutherford and property taxes are outrageously expensive and going up, the average is about $12,000 a year now. And this year for the cuts in services it's not worth it anymore to me. Looking ro move near family in WV soon.
