Similar to Ocean City, NJ
Hello all,
I live in the Philly area and my family (me+spouse+2-year old) just took my first trip to the Jersey Shore -- Ocean City to be exact. I loved the boardwalk, the little town, etc. Very nice.
For our next trip to the shore, are there any other suggestions of towns that are similar (nice boardwalk, good beach, nice crab shacks, etc). It doesn't have to be a "dry town".

I'm a huge fan of Avalon and Stone Harbor and just to the north is Sea Isle City. Can't speak for Sea Isle but Avalon and Stone harbor have great beaches and are very 'family' towns. You lose the boardwalk though and not sure if any other towns (other than Ocean City and Wildwood) have a boardwalk.... Sea Isle has one to walk on but not sure if there are rides etc. We usually take a trip to the boardwalk - usually Ocean City due to the age of our kids - once or twice when we are down for the week.... I've been going to Avalon/Stone Harbor for 20 years now and continue to go summer after summer....

Long Branch has a nice boardwalk and wide beaches. There's Pier Village in Long Branch which is a more upscale, less "beachy" atomosphere but it's still a nice place to walk around and grab a bite to eat. No rides. For that, you can go to Pt.Pleasant. It's not on the scale of Ocean City, of course, but it's a fun day with the family. Rides, boardwalk games, and lots of food!

Point Pleasant and Seaside Heights have boardwalks. Point Pleasant is more "family friendly" than Seaside, however, and is a small town with tons of shops on Arnold Avenue, as well as a lot of seafood restaurants, three or four right on the water.

Personally, I would skip the Jersey shore altogether......go to Ocean City, MD....cleaner beaches, better boardwalk, friendlier people, better seafood (the crab is great in MD, the crab I've had in Jersey was comparable to Red Lobster), more to do. Ocean City, NJ is OK, but the rest of the Jersey shore is pretty crummy compared to MD.
It tells you something when you see a lot of New Jersey license plates in OCMD.....the people from Jersey are bypassing their own beaches...

Better yet, go to Hawaii... It tells you something when you see a lot of people from every other state there, bypassing their own beaches.

Ocean City, MD. Very similar set-up as Ocean City, NJ but and it's even NICER.

I didn't like OCMD. Rehobeth DE is similar to OCNJ IMO.
The SJ beaches with boardwalks and rides are Seaside, OC, Wildwood. Sea Isle has a little boardwalk and Gillians put a couple rides in this year. OC is the most family oriented. Seaside and Wildwood are going to have more teens and stuff.

I did NOT like OCMD (went there with friends because her DD had a dance competition) - WAY too crowded and sleezy.....you can get a much better experience in Wildwood IMHO - and save the 2 hrs driving.
