I'm kind of surprised Margate didn't do better. I think a lot of people just aren't familiar with it enough to appreciate it, but I guess that's what I always kind of like about it, that it's "under the radar" somewhat. I love that it has a great beach, Lucy the Elephant, b-ball courts at the beach, beach volleyball, its own nightlife, some down-to-earth dining options, beautiful homes as well as modest homes which don't look shabby, Ventnor is nice to drive through and see the nice homes there on Atlantic... and the location is good. It's easy enough to drive to points south, or you can get to Ocean City boardwalk in 10 minutes for the kids, or for the adults a calm, pleasant drive to AC in 10 minutes.
It's just middle of the road, like a nice, regular town except on the beach. You don't put up with the crowds, lights, or noise that come with the boardwalk (either OC or AC), but you can drive to them very quickly. I used to love visiting my friends there, hanging out and having fun every night, but if we got bored, we could be in AC's excitement in no time.
I think Margate is the perfect all-around beach town.

I appreciate Ventnor and Margate - along with Longport it reminds me a lot of the stretch from Manasquan to Bradley Beach.

What he said. As a "Shore local," I've always thought Margate (and neighboring Longport) was one of the nicest towns A) at the shore and B) in the state. Many people just think of the big elephant, but it's an absolutely beautiful area with some incredible nice homes and neighborhoods, all a few blocks from the beach. Additionally, Margate has full bay frontage (for me, more important than being on the ocean) and a great, picturesque marina along Amherst Ave. which is an excellent place to watch the sunset.
Absolutely one of my top 5 towns in NJ!

My choice isn't even listed! Beach Haven for me.
