Hi -

We are planning to move from New York City after being in the city for 15 years to NJ. I don't know much about NJ, but was thinking of somthing in Middlesex County. Can anyone tell me about Carteret - the schools, communities and commute to Manhattan. Any other place in Middlesex county that you suggest?

Thanks,
Dewan

My parents grew up in Carteret in the 60's, and it was a decent area then- I wouldn't live there now, as the town has gone downhill since. There's a major redevelopment effort ongoing, but it'll be a while in the making.

If you want to be in Middlesex County and have kids, I'd look in Woodbridge, Edison, or Metuchen and forget Carteret and Perth Amboy.

Thank You , Bob! We have a 10 month's old son and thats why we are thinking about moving to NJ. How much a decent single cost in Woodbridge? What about commute?

You can get 3br, 1 ba houses in Woodbridge starting at around $300k, with something nicer being around $350k. The commute to Manhattan is actually easier from Woodbridge than Carteret because there are three train stations in the township- Woodbridge, Avenel, and Metropark- all with direct service to Penn Station. From Carteret you'd either have to drive in or drive to the train stations in Woodbridge. The only station with reasonably available parking is Metropark, and that'd be a 15-20 minute ride from Carteret on top of your commute.

I heard bus transit from Carteret to New York is pretty good and takes shorter time than places like woodbridge or Rahway. Is that true?
