i MUCH prefer a&p over shoprite, in this area. cheaper, cleaner, less crowded, you don't need a shoehorn to get down the aisles.

i used to shop at the OP's Pathmark back in the day - loved that store..prices couldn't be beat.

when i was living in brooklyn i came back to nj to visit my mom in holmdel. they had just redone the A&P on route 35. it brought a tear to my eye. in brooklyn the market is much smaller and packed with stuff. it looks so junky and everything is about 50% more expensive. it was like heaven.

anyway, i have a good selection of path mark, shop rite, a&p, food town and wegmans pretty close to me in morganville. i generally choose shop rite. pathmark did upgrade after shop rite upgraded so im sure it depends on the area and the competition. the a&p in holmdel upgraded because of the whole foods that move in down the road.

None of you can begin to ponder the essence of scummy clientele (or how poorly a store is kept) until you go to a Wal-Mart Supercenter, after 9 pm. Fortunately, those in NJ, unless you live near Turnersville, don't have any idea.

truer words have never been spoken. i've had the displeasure of doing that very thing in Kissimmee FL and it was ungodly frightening - and this is from someone who used to shop at Pathmark on 440 in JC - where COPS was filmed at one point.

Well, stores like Sams, BJ's, CostCo and (ugh) WalMart are making it hard to do much in the supermarket biz these days.

Grand Union fell through a while ago (really overpriced) and I have never really seen much from PathMark or A+P lately. And don't even start getting into the NYC supermarkets like Stop and Shop. You want to see expirations? What about vermin in the hallway?

Hoboken's A+P was the only place in town for a while, and was actually shut down for a few months because of a RAT infestation (actually, I think it was a time share). It is now taking a back seat to a mid-sized Shp Rite that is SO much better.

The bussing comment is a bit overgeneralized, but the people that seem to give the least crap about a place they are in are usually the ones with the least to actually lose. It is hard to respect something if you have never been taught to respect it (public property, etc).

So why do stores seem to have a harder time keeping clean and organized in areas where the lower socioeconomic brackets live and/or shop? You think it is a mutual lack of concern by both worker AND patron?

Yes they do. All Pathmark's suck. Outside of Wegmans and Whole Foods, ShopRite is the only food store in NJ.

A&P sucks, SR is far better. Acme sucks, SR is far cheaper and better. SR is it in NJ. There is no convincing me otherwise. And for the record ALL grocery stores in NJ suck. Wegman's and Whole Foods are decent but you pay dearly for that experience.

A&P have been around for over 100 years. At one time they were very good, don't know of late but if PathMark is being run like an A&P they've dropped the ball.
And don't even bother with their brand America's Choice absolutely horrible, at least for the most part a Shop Rite branded product is as good as the name brand..not so with this Americas choice

please limit your comments to where you live unless you've been to EVERY shop rite and EVERY a&p in the state.

I don't know if you've ever seen the movie "Ace Ventura", but several times, after leaving Wal-Mart, ESPECIALLY late PM, upon coming home, I feel like I just figured out that Einhorn = Finkle:

YouTube - ace ventura - einhorn is a man

I've felt THAT skeeved. By how low some elements of humanity can really be. Just wanting to rip my clothes off, take a shower, and brush my teeth.
