hi

My hubby has just been offered a job in NYC (on Seventh Avenue) and someone in the NY forum recommended NJ as a possible location to live.

We are estimating that we'll have about $3k to spend on rent a month. Ideally we'd like a house with at least 2 beds and possibly a small garden or yard but that isn't essential. We have a 12mth old baby so the second bed is for him. Any extra bedroom would be a bonus (for visitors) but not essential. Schools are not an issue at present.

Most importantly it needs to be in a pleasant area, not necessarily rural as we'll consider builtup areas too, we're not fussy. Would just like the house near a local shop for necessities. We'd also like it to be up to an hour max commute time but would consider 1.5 hrs commuting time, less time is preferable of course

The perfect house would be a low maintenance 2+ bed about 30-45mins commute in a pleasant area for a max of $3k rent a month. Are we asking too much or is that very reasonable?

When you rent a house, are there any other charges on top besides normal bills like electricity & gas?

Could anyone recommend an estate agent for the area?

Look in Westfield or Cranford.

check out newport (07310) and north hoboken by the waterfront (07030), for 3k you can rent a 3br/3ba luxury apartment, with only 1 baby that should work. Both areas are very nice and safe, surrounded by a relatively young population with many resturants and shops. I like newport a little better because transportation is at door to everywhere.

if you have to have a house, checkout boatworks (bayonne) and port liberte. Both are gated communities with port liberte been much more elaborate in term of amenities, however the surrounding area outside port liberte isnt as good.

Or you can just live purely in the family suburbs as mentioned above. Very quiet with rows of houses neatly next to each other. Although i am not sure how many rentals there are, as most people own their house.

Checkout all the areas mentioned, they have very different neighborhood feels.
