guy made 200k and bought a 960k house. it also seems like he thinks he has some kind of right to keep his house. apparently he said that if he sold his house he would be lucky to break even. ok, so sell it and break even and get something you can afford. moron.

$200K a year salary (wife didn't work), $960K condo with a monthly nut of $6200 (over 1/2 take home pay after taxes)? OM Freaking G. Lavish vacations, $200 bottles of wine? On a $200K salary?
This is not a hard luck story, this is the story of an incredibly financially stupid person, one of thousands who got us into this mess to begin with.

Well, although it's hard to feel sorry for someone not willing to sell his $960,000 condo, calling him garbage and wanting hime to die is a little harsh, isn't it? Clearly from what is reported below, they are responsible people. Being well off financially doesn't make you a monster.
The Arayas purchased the condo in 2005 with a 20% down payment and a pre-construction price. The proximity of the two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment to the trading pit allowed Mr. Araya to spend more time with his family and less time commuting. Ms. Araya diligently managed the family budget with Excel charts to ensure that they had no credit card debt, good credit histories even an emergency fund saved over five years that is now depleted. Mr. Araya says he would be lucky to find a buyer and break even on the apartment now.

I honestly don't think I buy that. If you're spending 1/2 your salary on mortgage, taking fancy vacations and eating in expensive restaurants, I find it VERY hard to believe they weren't robbing peter to pay paul in some fashion (HELLO HELOC). We also don't know how much their emergency savings was (for all we know they put away $1/yr for 5 years, LOL).
But you know what? They are adults. Put your big pants on, sell the condo, move to a cheaper area and rent. Life blows, suck it up and deal with it!
The other words from previous posters ARE harsh though.

OMG, I can't believe you people. This man rose above his upbringing to provide a much better life for himself and his family. Through no fault of his own he is about to lose absolutely everthing, and he has young children!
My sympathy is with him and his family. I just hope all of you who are so smug and righteous never have to face what this man and his family are facing. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.
