There was no reason for the police to even stop unless there's a law in Passaic that you have to have your sweatshirt zipped up. If they were smart they would have just made the turn and drove on but for some reason they decided to pick on a helpless man and find a reason to beat him. Hope you're proud of yourself officer Rios.
In my opinion, they arrested the wrong guy. They should've locked up the idiot pushing his daughter on her tricylce all the way up to the fight for a better view.
There are some bad apples, but the majority of police officers aren't power-trippy egomaniacs. I'm sure for every story like this, there are at least a dozen other officers who would've handled the situation more professionally. It just so happens that incidents like this make headlines and the dozen cases not like it don't.
One of my best friends is a Sgt in Newark, trust me most cops are power trippy. Sorry if it offends you just my opinion. Too much power, it human nature to be an idiot when you have all the power.
I've read horrible stories of diabetics in insulin shock being mistaken for drunks or druggies and mistreated by the police, or arrested and denied timely medical assistance.
I would think some training for officers about various conditions- both mental and physical- that might mimic intoxication or cause aggression, disorientation, or belligerence might be in order.
I'd love to hear an audio on that one. There's an exchange, the guy on the corner zips his fleece jacket (obviously after being told to cover himself) and that's provocation? The cop hurried out of the car to beat and throw him around.
I did notice that the the other officer didn't become involved. I don't think the the A+ personality having a bad day could have been easily calmed down though. Backup arrived pretty quickly which probably saved the guy.

I have no problem with this... this was hardly a "beating"....
I dont care if you have a mental disorder or not. If you are mouthing off to a cop and they pop you one, that is just the way it goes
So you think it's OK that the police use violence against people who said things they don't like?
No wonder the government treats the constitution as a piece of toilet paper, the damn people want the government to employ jack booted thugs to stomp people they don't like the look of.
If that's the general attitude that the US deserves the economic hell that's coming - might remind people of what the country is supposed to be about. Might as well burn the declaration of independence and the Constitution and let the Queen take over. Since freedom and liberty are obviously not considered worth anything.

I dont think that it should be legal for police to use violence against people who mouth off, but i live in the real world, and it happens. And I really have no problem with that.
The police are not politicians... In the town i grew up in, its mostly guys i went to HS with.
And believe me jack, there is no bigger supporter of freedom then me
