Hi everyone,
I posted previously thinking we (my fiance and i) would be moving upstate NY. However when we were actually approved for a mortgage we were told that we were approved for a 2 family (meaning we need the extra income). Our budget is 400k. We were looking for single family homes so now we have to start our search all over again.

So we're looking for a two family home for 400k or less in a commuter friendly area of New Jersey (we both work in NYC). Location is our most important factor (we want to live in a good area, we've paid our dues). A good school district is also important as my younger brother lives with us. Can you guys suggest areas of New Jersey that would fit the bill?
Thanks!

uptown North Bergen, Cliffside Park, or Secaucus have 2 family homes that fit your criteria...

I second Secaucus. It is a safe, nice town with decent schools and a great commute to NYC (20-30 min by bus to midtown, and now there is a parking deck at Secaucus Junction, or so I95 billboards tell me). There are a lot of 2-family homes there.

My research has provided many homes for North Bergen. Secaucus has slim pickings. Are there specific ares in North Bergen or Secaucus that you advise i stay away from?
