Default Downtown Mount Holly

I am looking at several houses for sale in "historic" downtown Mount Holly new jersey. I am relocating from North Dakota so I know nothing about the area. I need to know if this would be a safe place to raise a young family.

I don't think so. It's a beautiful Main St, tree-lined, my kind of homes when it comes to architecture. However, it's the county seat of Burlington County. A good rule of thumb (there are always exceptions) when it comes to NJ: county seats are not inhabited by the most savory individuals. That's a shame too, because I think Mount Holly has a lot of potential. Very close to the NJ Turnpike exit 5, location to NJ shore is relatively easy, etc. I remember Mt Holly back in the mid 80s and it wasn't nearly as forboding as it was when I left that area 4 years ago.

Mount Holly is very mixed but I don't know that I would consider it dangerous. Still the crime numbers will be higher than surrounding towns. If you pick your spots you might something very decent in MH in an OK area. In terms of buying into MH, realize the town is a urban enterprise zone to spur development. This could be good or bad. The local officials are cleaning up parts of town and they do quite a number of activities in downtown. Lots of work remains. The downtown area of MH is very nice, one of nicer downtowns in the State IMO but the town's image suffers due to having a very low income populous in certain areas coupled with the fact that the schools are not considered to be good. That general area of South Jersey, however, is very desirable, especially going further west on Rt 38 toward Mount Laurel and Moorestown. You might consider Lumberton or Hainesport which is next to MH, a clear step up, but also more expensive. Lumberton also has a lot more farms and open space which might suit you more coming from ND.

moorestownresident- you make me giggle "Lumberton also has a lot more farms and open space which might suit you more coming from ND" i HATE ND! haha i grew up on the east coast and would like to see trees again! but thank you very much for the information. we are relocating because my husband is being stationed at McGuire AFB so he doesn't want a commute more than 20-30 minutes.
it really is too bad, all the houses we are looking at on-line seem perfect but then we hear that the neighborhood/schools are bad!

Well, you didn't post that. Lots of military personnel in Lumberton btw.

Is Browns Mills really bad? I've never been there, but I'm curious.

Actually Mount Holly is blessed with Rancocas Valley High School.....its whats known as a Star school with lots of extras including its own TV station. Both my daughters graduated from there and I have always been impressed with the professionalism and quality of the teachers that I have met there over 8 years !!!

I grew up in Mt. Holly and graduated from Rancocas Valley H.S. It is a good school so don't worry about that. If you're looking in the historic district for a house I don't think you need to worry about any thing. There are some areas to stay away from...Levis Drive, Pine Street, and Madison Ave. to name a few. There are some nice neighborhoods around Woodlane Rd. and Jacksonville Rd.
