Live in NJ-Work in NYC: How does that work for unemployment? (taxes, best)

I live in NJ, work in NYC. I may be getting laid off. Do I claim NJ unemployment or NY? The only reason why I ask is because I pay NY taxes (which they then forward a portion over to NJ from that agreement the states have). If anyone experienced this first hand, comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

I worked in NJ and lived in NY - I collected from NJ because that 's where I worked. You will need to claim NY unemployment. My understanding is that they're slightly less generous in NY compared to NJ.

You are supposed to claim unemployment in the state where you WORK.
I live in NJ and work (well, worked) in NYC...therefore, I collect unemployment from NY state.

NY unemployment SUCKS!!!! After they take out taxes, you end up with a maximum of about $385 a week.

In NJ, the max unemployment is $584 a week!!!

Hopefully you don't get laid off, but if you do, make sure you file a claim the VERY next day (you can collect unemployment simultaneously while getting your severence)! It takes 3 weeks before you get your first unemployment check, so you really should not wait to file.

You collect from whatever fund you pay into- it'll be listed on your paycheck stub. My best guess is that you're paying into NY's system, so that's who you'll collect from.
