iagirl is on a distinguished road
I can't really compare the two towns but just wanted to add that I can relate to how you are feeling. We have lived in Nutley for six years and spend tons of time in Bloomfield and Montclair. I love to hate Essex County; the taxes, the congestion, and really anything else I can find to complain about. I have severe "grass is greener" syndrome and finally my husband got fed up and agreed to start looking. So last weekend we explored Union County a bit (Scotch Plains mostly), and when I was imagining living there, all I could think about was how different it was from where we live now (even though it doesn't seem that different in reality). In fact, I did a "test drive" from work the next day, and got a pit in my stomach when I went south on the GSP instead of north! It's ridiculous really. I guess even though I don't like it here, it has become my home. It has been pretty easy to make friends, we both have decent commutes (NYC and Roseland), we have the convenience of larger box/chain stores (Clifton) and the quaint shops of Montclair, Bloomfield has the great Brookdale Park and we have settled into a manageable life. Btw: Hot Bagels Abroad in Bloomfield is a family favorite. Good luck.

Bloomfield sounds like it would fit your price range a little better but the problem is the train from there doesn't go directly into midtown if I'm not mistaken
