Default East Orange... MY Perspective

I just want to go for the record of saying that I am going to be moving to north newark or east orange in a few months. I have heard so much NEGATIVITY about East Orange that I was really expecting the worse. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WIH EVERYONE? Im white & the only difference I saw in this town than other towns is that the majority of the people happen to be African American. I bet most of these people who write this negative stuff about this town is white and they have their noses to far up their a$$e$ & too good to associate themselves with people outside their race. It is a cute town with a lot of nice houses and places to rent. Its quiet & the people there like me there already. What's up with this negativity. BTW I live in Union City & always here that it is sooo ghetto. PUH LEEZ.

Yeah. You pretty much nailed it on the head.
There are people on this forum that think West Orange is too diverse*, so what do you expect?

*'diverse' is City-Data code for 'not white enough'

While East Orange is bad I see some hope. I feel like the city is making an effort to improve itself. While places like Irvington continue to rot with no hope or plan. Obviously East Orange imo is a bad place but I see some hope in its future. The same can not be said for Irvington or Orange.

Yea, pretty much. A town like EO is tough if you're trying to raise kids, though.

If you like the area, then who cares what anyone says.....

I remember when we moved out of Manhattan all our friends told us to look at Millburn. We liked the area well enough, but decided to expand our search and really fell in love with the Gregory section of West Orange....So many people thought we were nuts to choose WO over Millburn....but for us it made sense.

The same thing goes for Orange...We were told there is no reason to go into Orange, but it's not that bad a town IMO. It's certainly less affluent..not the awful town many describe.

I have next to zero experience with East Orange, but here's my take. The crime rate is slightly higher than average there when compared with the average US city (per http://www.city-data.com/city/East-O...ew-Jersey.html). It's actually been improving for several years now and the crime rate has been halved. I'd be interested to hear more details from others about the overall direction that East Orange is heading in and what are the drivers since I really don't know.

This isn't to say that people don't harbor racial biases with all other elements being equal. They definitely do.

On Union City, I'll have to disagree with you. Union City is just a poor city and it shows. It's not well kept. It's dirty. People use the street as a garbage can, don't pick up after their dogs, etc. The main commercial thoroughfare, Bergenline, is filled with check cashing stores and dollar stores--anyone who's ever been to Journal Square knows what I'm talking about or to the main drag in Passaic. This isn't to say that UC doesn't have its benefits nor that it doesn't have potential. Housing is cheap there. Some good eats can be found if you know where to look. The location is superb for commuting. But many people on this board have certain priorities when they are looking for a town such as space, aesthetics, good schools and low crime. Union City doesn't fit the bill in any of these categories and East Orange has less than stellar schools and higher than average crime.

East Orange, Union City and Irvington are all garbage dumps. Yea Yea Yea...I know the PC police will mindlessly attack me as a bigot, but I don't care. These towns are a disaster. It's not about race. It's not about having your nose up in the air if you criticize them. Instead of whining about people calling these towns for what they are, why not just clean them up and make them more livable?

to the original poster, you are the one that needs to get off your high horse.

newark/east orange etc..has nothing to do with race, they are simply shtty towns to live in, that are unsafe.
