I went to see Jersey Boys in Atlanta tonight. Now, I'm homesick for NJ. It was nice to hear people sound like I do again.
But... the signs in the lobby were hysterical. "Warning, this production contains authentic profane Jersey language." Whaaaat? Now Jersey gets ownership of swear words?

WHY is this thread still active? the OP, mrgrinch, is obviously a troll looking to get everyone worked up - and it looks like he succeeded.
did anyone notice that he hasn't come back to post even once since his original query?
i took a look-see at his posting history, and it seems that he's constantly lying. check out some of his comments in other posts:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/charl...ml#post6945629
"What part of Jersey? I'm from Cherry Hill."
so this guy is actually from south jersey? why then did he identify himself in this thread as a north carolinan who's originally from wisconsin and wants to know if jersey is "really that horrible"? shouldn't he already have an opinion about the state based on first-hand experience?
unless he's just a troll looking to stir things up...nah, couldn't be!
here's another post by him in the arkansas thread from this past january (fyi - the following is his first ever post on city-data with the "mrgrinch" username):
http://www.city-data.com/forum/arkan...ml#post6867839
"I live in the northeast and im looking to leave. I havnt decided where I'll be going but I am considering either NC, Atlanta or Maybe Dallas or Arkansas."
i thought this guy was a native of wisconsin who is currently living in north carolina? so why is he "considering" NC if he's already there? unless he's really in jersey, like he mentioned in that other post?
then, only THREE MINUTES after the above post, he wrote the following in the charlotte forum:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/charl...ml#post6867897
"I am will be moving soon and my job is in Gastonia."
wait a minute...i thought he was "considering" north carolina (gastonia is a suburb of charlotte). at least that's what he'd written three minutes earlier.
but now he's got the job lined up and ready to go? i guess it didn't take him very long to nix atlanta, dallas, and arkansas - and in all of three minutes, no less!
later that very same day, mrgrinch posted the following in the charlotte forum:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/charl...ml#post6871444
"people here complain about the economy, but its better here than in most of the country"
wow. for a guy who was debating between north carolina, atlanta, dallas, and arkansas only a few hours earlier, he sure is an expert about the charlotte area.
a few days later - also in january 2009 - he posted the following in the charlotte forum, under the title "Getting evicted in NC":
http://www.city-data.com/forum/charl...ml#post6945516
"I have been renting an apartment for nearly a year."
i guess renting an apartment in the charlotte area for "nearly a year" leading up to january 2009 aided mrgrinch in the decision making process of whether to move to north carolina.
ok, sarcasm aside, it's pretty clear that this guy is a fraud.
here's one more gem by mrgrinch, entitled "Is Michigan and Detroit really that bad?", which was posted only a few minutes after the "Is New Jersey Really that Horrible?" thread:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/detro...ml#post9291695
"Everybody on TV talks about the gloom and doom of MI and that there is no hope for economic recovery and that MI will see 20% unemployment in the next 2 yrs and your only option is to leave the state. Another transplant I met compared Detroit to Baghdad. One lady I met said that suicides are common. Wow
Is it true?"
clearly, mrgrinch was feeling especially mischievous on the 14th of june.
sorry for the long post guys, but i just wanted to make the point that we needn't get so worked up over trollish posts like the OP's. i've fallen for the bait a few times in the past but avoided this thread up til now because i didn't want to get involved. tonight, though, i had to check in and see why it was still going strong.
normally i wouldn't ask the mods to shut down a thread, but when it's a blatant instance of trolling such as this, perhaps it's best for everyone to end it now.

I don't know.
Gas has always been cheaper in NJ due to the lower tax on it.
So you may THINK you pay less for self serve, but what you are really paying is more for full serve.

If they don't force it, they will not provide it.
The amount they save on labor never matches what they charge for it when they give it.
Also, there is less risk of accidental fire or damage with full serve (there have been some incients).
You have to realize that the world is not a happy place, if they did not force things to be, companies would do as little as possible to get as much for it as possible (or get as much for as little as possible).
You think eliminating service will make them lower gas prices?
Not.

can you give me an example of a place where you DON'T have to drive a "long" way to get to everything above? or do you just have an issue about crossing state lines, and if you do...I don't get it?!
|
Well, since NYC, Philly, and Boston don't do much for me (Boston? BOSTON? Who brags about proximity to a city that far away? Just about EVERYBODY is within a 5 hour drive of one city or another!) that's a non-starter in my book. I mean sure, it's fun every once in a while to go into the city, but whether it's 1.5 hr drive or 4 hour drive to do that makes no difference to me for the once a year or so that I do it.
Beaches are OK, there's nicer ones eleswhere and it's not really my thing anyway. You mention the Catskills, Poconos, etc.... my point is it's nice to live in an area where you can do outdoor activities such as you might in those areas without spending half the day getting there and back, that if you want to do these things regularly NJ isn't the place because you have to drive a ways to get "out". Sure, NJ has some nice state parks and so on that fill the bill when you're pressed for time or as an old standby, but relatively speaking most of them are not that special compared with the opportunities in most other northeastern states. So, there's your "example" right there for places you "don't have to drive a long way".... the fact that in most every (every?) other northeastern state you can get to better outdoor rec oportunites than almost anything NJ's got in a fraction of the time it takes to get to any of these places, even the Catskills, from NJ (I didn't mention the Poconos, even though they have some nice areas, because in general it's mostly gotten too residential/developed and commercialized for my taste... why drive an hour to get there when it looks not much different from where I live?). In terms of outdoor recreation, if you're really "into" it there's a lot to be said for being able to do things like go for a "real" hike even if you've only got 3-4 free hours on a Sunday morning, or leave to go camping on a Fri. night after work and get to the campsite at 7 and set up and relax and make dinner instead of arriving an hour or two after dark, that sort of thing.

I agree with pretty much the general consensus. Obviously everyone agrees the taxes are high, and traffic is horrible, but look at all the amazing things NJ has. Atlantic city, Smithville, Statue of Liberty, amazing beaches!! There are so many more, just too much to list right now. I live at the shore and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I have been born and raised here. The only people that move out of Jersey and move south are simply the people who CAN'T HANDLE NJ. They don't try hard enough to get a good job and then complain about it because they can't afford anything

Not true. When I lived in Ewing Township, you could smell the wonderful honeysuckle as you came off Rt 95 onto Federal City Road. Beautiful!
