this is the silly notion that cops are of some value when someone's house is broken into. they only come by after it has happened.

^ Erm... What were you expecting in real life? A cop to camp out in front of your house, 24/7? A cop to live in your house? Do you want 24/7 surveillence on your house? You better be thankful that no one broke into your house...

Captain,
You are quite the interesting poster. Some times you make very salient points, but then other times, you debunk what logic you may have previously imparted. This is one such instance. Police are needed to maintain civil order. Case closed. I don't know sometimes why so many people are down on the police. There are many careers out there where one can not affix a price tag to. Law enforcement is one of them. Are there individually bad police officers out there? You bet. Do they comprise any where near the majority? No. The real axe to grind here seemingly is legislation. There is plenty of it out there. The police officer is essentially a public servant, who dutifully follows orders handed out by his or her superior, who in turn gets his orders from people who possess a legal background. If you really carry out the argument logically, that's where you have to arrive at. Stop blaming the officer. The officer isn't the problem. I remember about 20 years ago I felt more like you do. But I grew up, matured and have been able to view it through a more pragmatic lens. I think some day you will too.

i dont agree that the case is closed there. currently, i dont believe you can eliminate any form of law enforcement, but police in their current encarnation arent needed.
i am not blaming the officer, i am suggesting that we eliminate the officer or drastically change his job responsibilities. they are all scum but regardless, we allow them to get away with it. thats offensive. i see some cop this morning on my way to work tailgating people in the left lane and cutting in and out of lanes because he has some god given right to go faster than everyone else. they are always in the bus lane. a thought went through my mind, i bet they dont like the unmarked police cars because while more effective for catching speeders, people dont move out of their way so easily unless they use the lights (which they have no justification for because they just want to speed ahead of everyone).

All major companies are suffering and have to lay off employees. They need to cut police too! I live in a tiny town and cannot believe how many policemen patrol ONE very small town! It is overkill.

government waste is protected at the expense of working people. americans are losing their jobs while we are spending an additional $10 million to educate people in cambodia.

anyway, what is the value to having libraries?
|
Libraries make knowledge readily available for those who seek it out. Do you deny that reading makes a person more valuable in the workforce and society, in general? An ancillary, but important role of a library is making the books available to those who could not afford to buy them. Again, I do not have the numbers to point to, but I would bet that the libraries fulfill this role at a relatively small cost.
