Default NJ Suburbs and State police need to be cut by 50%

Its gotten out of hand. They dont even do there jobs anymore. They spend more time setting up seat belt check points and sitting there using a radar gun then anything else.

NJ has the second highest amount of police officers per capita.

I have no problems with Citys having a lot of police, but does a middle class town of 15,000 really need 30 police officers? It's ridiculous. cant drive down the street for 5 minutes without seeing a cop.

Default Many will agree, None will act

While many will agree, I seriously doubt anyone will do anything about it.
I used to live in a town that had about 15,000 people and they had about 99 police officers. many friends of mine, but due to the power and politics involved who would be the one to say "too much"?

One thing for sure, we pay tolls on the toll roads NOT so the assigned troopers can sit by and hall-monitor the highways to extract more money, fines, penalties from us. Stay off the roads, we will call you if needed.

They also use tolls to replace the trooper cars when they reach 50,000 miles.

Remember the original idea of the State Policw was to patrol back woods in motorcycles and sleep in tents. Get back to the basics. Go camping and leave the roads to the taxpayers.

Many towns have eliminated their police forces in favor of the state police. I live in Hainesport and our town including several neighboring towns eliminated their police force and our taxes reflect the savings......it makes no sense today with the cost to run everything for each little town to bear the cost of running their own police force.

for once I am in a town where the cops dont **** me off. I barely see them, they seem actually nice not roided out and I dont see that cat /mouse game. They truely seem like good dudes. Now in Bergen County Hillsdale the cops were up my ass!! I really could not go from Waldwick to Hillsdale without seeming 2 cops in everytown. Hillsdale, Woodcliff Lake, Saddle Rive, Ho Ho Kus and waldwick. This actually accounted for 8 cops in less than 3 miles!!! Pathetic, all waiting to give me a ticket. I really hated those JAR HEADS!!

I strongly agree, but I don't think the taxpayers in a lot of these areas do. I don't mind the police presence, so much as I mind the fact that each officer is making more than $65k and they top out into the low $100's for patrolling towns where they do not face much if any danger. This is true, at least, in my part of the state-bergen county, according to an article I read in The Record last summer.

exactly. This is the area which i am talking about. I could understand having a lot of police if you have a nice town that borders a city like Newark or Paterson, but come on. A town like Ramsey has no areas that are questionable at all within 10 miles and they have a massive police force...

and dont forget they need that brand new DODGE CHARGER, the old car was only 3 years old but they got to have that charger!!! Add with it a motorcycle, all these little toys for these jar heads. I really dislike them, especially this one jar head in hillsdale. I mean the third degree for a soccor mom who did not use her blinker, woooo big crime here. they have become glorified tax collectors. Bloated, roided , jar heads. Dont get me started, I could write a book with what a waste it is. Most people can police themselves.

what would be your formula (ratio of cops/citizens -vs- crime rate) and how much do you believe they should make?

methinks someone just got a speeding ticket.

I had to chime in. The PBA union is huge and one of the strongest unions in NJ. Once a cop gets something in their contract there is no taking it away. As far as the cars and motorcycles thats up to the town council and usually they budget over a 3 year period to get new cars. There are alot of towns that the cops make a hell of alot more with so little crime. The money they make doesn't necessarily come from the tax payers it comes from the side jobs. They get around $40 an hour the cop gets $35 and the town gets $5 for the use of their car,and workcomp just so the cops can sit in the car or look down the hole. The problem is when one town has a great contract they all copy.

They take things out of our contract when we negotiate with the towns and also add things. And the off duty jobs pay 50 not 35.
