Black Woman Moving to Ironbound Section
'Sup guys:
I'm a young black woman in my late twenties who is looking to move into the Ironbound section of Newark. While there are some nicely renovated streets in other areas of Newark that I could have chosen, I decided on the Ironbound because it's within walking distance to the Path, and I need to commute to NYC 5 days out of the week for graduate school.
Anyway, I'm wondering if I should expect to feel out of place or will everything be just fine? The reality is certain cultures prefer to stay with "their kind." Plus I don't speak Spanish or Portuguese; just pure English.
I eagerly await your replies. Thanks in advance.

There are African-Americans in the Ironbound. The majority seem to live in one of the three public housing projects located here. However, there are blacks who live in other parts of the Ironbound. Although no where near the majority Down Neck I do not see you having any problems.

You won't have a problem living in the Ironbound, and you won't be the only black person there -- the majority of the people are Portuguese, Brasilian, or other Latinos, but it's not exclusively so. Frankly, it's true that you should expect to hear more Spanish and Portuguese on the street than you will English, and if that bothers you then I wouldn't recommend living there. But nearly everyone also speaks English so it's not like you won't be able to get by. It's gotten a little more "hip" in recent years, but it never was the biggest place for nightlife apart from the restaurant/cafe scene, so it's true as a relatively young person you might not find as many cool "hangout" options as some other neighborhoods in the NYC area. But it's the safest part of Newark, and you'll have access to plenty of good restaurants and cafes, so I think it's a good choice for you.
Enjoy it!

I think you should consider Bayonne, there a path train that runs to Exchange place and it's a safe place to live! I'm a black female that has been living in Bayonne for two years and I love it here...

There are a good amount of blacks in the Ironbound. Keep in mind Brazil is the blackest country on Earth so it's not like they'll look at you like an alien. The only barrier might be your non-English speaking skills, but I don't speak a lick of Portuguese or Spanish either and I do fine when I go to the Ironbound.
Good choice moving to Newark, there are going to be some people who give you a hard time on here about coming to this city, but I actually live here and experience it everyday and I can assure you you've made a fine choice.

Yeah, I doubt as a black person you will find some type of hidden racisim in the Ironbound. Newark is mostly black to begin with, and it ain't as if Brazilians are from some small village in Sweeden.

I feel your unknown fear. Be mindful that you are better off cohabitating with Brasilians and Spaniards. They are familiar and well accomodating to blacks than you would expect. Remember you can reside where ever you deem fit for you, just ignore whatever imaginary boundaries there might be!
