Question about Belmar (sleeping w/o hotel)
I may be doing a fast "up and back" run to attend a function in Belmar one evening this summer. My family won't be joining me, so I don't need a hotel or anything. (Gotta save those $$$.)
My question is... can I sleep in my vehicle after the function is over, before I hit the road back home?
Being a shore town, I don't know this is against the law or not. I'd rather catch some sleep in my vehicle at the place I was at that evening versus driving around to find a rest area or similar.
I also don't want to drive if I have a few cold ones at this reception. (I don't plan on "partying", but I don't want to take chances either.)
I'd appreciate any insight or ideas.

The Belmar police will not tolerate sleeping in cars they may think that you are drunk and may risk arrest if you are caught and hit you with a summons

what kind of police state are we living in? If your drunk and sleeping in your car, the police should be thanking you for being responsible enough to not drive. How the hell is sleeping in your car illegal? What the hell man.
Man these cops are just too much.

They didn't tolerate it back in the 70's, doubt it today. The residents don't want their town turned into some dump with people sleeping in cars. Spend a few bucks for a motel. Or keep the car on private property such as where the event takes place. At best you will get awakened and moved. But Belmar takes no sh*t so you might wind up with a summons.
It's a town ordinance, not a state statute.
Damn them from trying to avoid turning the town into Newark. what were they thinking.

I slept in my car back in the day when I was a poor college student. God knows how many times I did this at the Jersey Shore. Geeez. You're told time and time again that it's dangerous and illegal to drive while drunk. And now the cops want to ticket you for sleeping in your car. You just can't win. However, I'm not surprised. The NJ shore during the summer months can be overbearing. You need a gazillion quarters to feed the meters. They charge you 8 bucks to get on the beach, and god forbid you want to drink a beer on the beach. They'll hit you with an expensive summons. Don't forget about the whiney locals who complain about all of the out of towners who come to the beach even though you are spending money in their town. You're better off just going elsewhere for a vacation or a long weekend. And that is what I'm doing this summer. I'll be heading down to Fla where the beach is free, the locals don't whine, and the cops don't bust chops. Here is the part. It's about the same price as going to the NJ Shore for a week.

A friend of mine back in the 70's said he got a DWI sleeping in the back seat of his car only becasue he left his keys in the ignition. Don't know if that makes a diff, but take that for what its worth.

I used to sleep in my car all the time. But never in Belmar. I would just try to be inconspicuous and see what happens.
