You may just live at Edison since Edison is top 10 most safest towns in the nation with great schools, and $1500 to $1600 a month can rent very nice 2br 2ba condo or even townhouses in Edison.

If you need to walk to Train Station, Edison Hollow South is only 5 min walk to Edison Train that I have neighbor working at Metropark Train station area, and just two stops NJ Transit, or you can just drive over to work.

My neighbor has a for rent by owner sign which is a 2 story condo of 1800 sq ft with rent about $1,600 that you would like it very much. It is hard to find these type of units since only dozen such units in EHS out of total 220 units. If you are interested in, you can call the owner directly. Edison Hollow South

Wish you well with the move. My wife and I and our families are doing the exact opposite of you and your family. We make a good buck and still cant afford what we want. We are goint to fort Worth on wednesday 6/27 to check out that area, we were in Austin (Round Rock-Leander) in January and loved it. When we get back we will decide on which area and put our place on the market. It wont be long now

I don't blame you for loving Austin. A wonderful city. I would rent in Metuchen. You do not have to rent in an apartment community. You can rent a condo or townhome or even a house and see if you like it. Schools are good in Metuchen and Edison. Metuchen is a small town. It is surrounded by Edison. We are known as the hole in the doughnut. Good luck whatever you do.
