I think it really depends on what part of town for both of them. There are parts of WO that are very unsafe and same goes to SO. But from my personal experience I feel safer in the bad part of WO then the bad part of SO, though SO has a nicer upscale part of town.

There are no 'bad parts' of South Orange. Part of South Orange boarders Newark, some people freak about this.

South Orange by a long shot. Folks tend to consider those areas of S. Orange adjoining Vailsburg Newark as bad. That's a load of crap. As far as Essex County goes, it doesn't get any better than S. Orange, IMO, unless you prefer your town lily white and completely devoid of artistic vibe or vision. S. Orange isn't perfect, but it's the best community you're likely to find in NJ - all things considered. Warts and all - I'll take it over any other community in NJ including Westfield and Montclair.

The part that borders Newark by SHU is very dicey.

SO is nice, but my heart has a soft spot for WO, since I spend more time there. And I love where I stay in WO - so, definitely there. (unless I marry Zach Braff and we move to his childhood home, then I'll settle for SO )

From my experience, the people in South Orange seem depressed and mean. However the area looks lively.

The people in West Orange seem cheerful and nice. However some areas are just drab.

Overall, West Orange is better.

BS. I was a student at SHU and even in orientation they warn you not to wander into Vailsburg. The students go there anyway but only to buy drugs and or prostitutes. Take a ride down Salem street and tell me its a not a bad area.
