Default So how bad is the bad part of Somerville?

I saw a home in the "bad" part that looked like it had a lot of potential, but I'm not sure if "bad" means diversity or less affluent (like it does in so many other instances) or is the area riddled with crime and drugs?

Where do you call bad? Somerville was my ol stomping grounds and I dont remember a real bad part. I remember Somerville most for its very high population of mixed marraiges (black/white). We always felt safe walking down main street. What area are you talking about specificaly?

South bridge st and the area behind the railraod tracks. I read the boards and everyone considers this the bad part. All I saw was some diversity o I'm wondering if I missed something.

Default Somerville

Somerville is a small town with a fine, safe mainstreet. So bridge st area is less well kept than other areas but in the scheme of things I wouldn't hesitate if the house prices are relative. The area around memorial drive had been known for drug dealing but all this is on a very small scale. Small town, good police force, bad guys can't hide.

Train station right there, spitting distance from the courthouse and jail, hospital.

Still don't get what folks mean by the code word, 'diversity'.

Well it's been awhile since I been in that area you speak of. Parts of Bridge St are nice too. No matter where you live in the USA, nearly all areas near tracks will be fugly. When you have a noisy train riding by daily you can no longer sell your house and soon the whole neighborhood turns rental units. In the old days it was desirable to live next to RR tracks.

When you find a house that's a deal then there is a reason. You can take your chances, buy it and rehab it. Who knows maybe you fixing up your new house will be contagious and others will do the same.

Market the positives. Walk to all kinds of shopping. Walk to the train station. They are big positives !

Good luck !

There's one street, 2nd (Ave?) off of South Bridge that seems to have all the trouble. Usually drug stuff, I think a couple of dealers lived there although they may be gone now.
Overall though it is an underrated little town I think. Nice high street, restaurants. Very walkable. Good hospital. Plenty of big box stores within easy reach. Not a snobby "top town" but on the good side, that makes it affordable for normal non-ego driven people.
Big police presence by virtue of Somerset Courts in the town.

LMAO. I don't see how the children's races had anything to do with the "trashy" factor either.
