I've heard good things about this town which is a 10-15 minute drive from my new job in Wayne and easy accessto NYC by train. I'm also looking at Union City and Montlcair. Any advice about Hawthorne will be appreciated. I'll be looking for a two bedroom, a decent elementary school, and around $1500 rent.
Hawthorne is a nice town. Definitely worth checking out. There is a little bit of an overflow from Paterson, but definitely not a lot.
Montclair is a nice town, but completely different from Hawthorne. Hawthorne is more blue collar, old school New Jersey while Montclair is a rich-yuppie town where a lot of ex-NY'ers/Manhattanites have moved to.
Union City again is completely different from the previous two towns. Union City is proably one of the most hispanic towns in all of New Jersey. It used to be only the Cubans who lived there, but now a lot of different spanish people live there. Its not a bad town, but you may feel out of place if you aren't spanish.
Montclair is a mix of super rich and not so nice. Union City - no comment. Do you mean Union maybe? (who made up these names?)
Hawthorne is decent. It is by no means Glen Rock or Ridgewood, but we border these towns. We rent here now, and are considering buying a house. We have a very decent 2 Bed, 1.5 bath with driveway parking for $1100. We walk to the grocery store, movie theatre, deli, restaurants. Middle school is right around the corner. Parts of Hawthorne suck, as they get too close to Prospect Park and Paterson, no offense. When are you planning on moving?
