Default Daily life in Mountainside

My husband and 4 kids and I are planning a move to NJ from NYC. We are stuck between Mountainside and Westfield. THe house we like in Mountainside is considerably less expensive and ofcourse taxes are too, but I was wondering if daily quality of life would be as good. In Mountainside how do people get their children to school and pick them up on time when one child is at Deerfield school and the other is at Beechwood? It doesn't seem like enough time in between. The thought of my son riding his bike in the neighborhood is terrifying, is that an issue ( due to the steep inclines)? Is there a "community" feel there? Also we are a multiracial family, doen anyone feel this will be more of an issue in Mountainside than Westfield? Any help is appreciated.
