Hi,
I am looking to buy our first house in NJ and would like to get some advice from the NJ experts in the forum here. Here is our situation.
1. I work in Pearl River, Rockland County NY and my wife works in NYC. I drive to work while my wife would prefer to take public transportation to NYC.
2. Our budget is 350 - 400 k and we are looking for a single family house in a nice diverse neighborhood. I think we prefer sub-urban lifestyle more than urban.
3. We have an infant so not too worried about school districts right now, however, I believe that could become an important criteria if we decide to sell the house. But we would definately want a pretty safe area
4. Ideally we would like to have the house in an area where my drive is 30-45 mins and my wife's public transportation commute to NYC is not more than 60-75 mins.
Do you experts have any advice on what towns in NJ should we be looking at. I will appreciate any input.
Ramsey or Mahway should work. Even though your child is still a baby - trust me when I say they will be starting kindergarten before you know it. Go for a decent school district now.

Ramsey or Mahwah for $350 or 400K? Not bloody likely.
My first recommendation would be Fair Lawn, although 400K still might be a bit of a stretch. Good schools, train access, and commutes within the OP's range (or close, anyway).

What are you talking about? There are 36 single family houses currently listed in Mahwah under $420k. Ramsey may be more of a stretch but still doable.

Yeah, I see some too. I don't think Ramsey is more expensive necessarily. Taxes are much better in Mahwah though.
I don't have a good idea about property taxes in NJ but I guess 8-9 k would be my upper limit.
Thanks everyone for area suggestions. I would love to have more input on that. Also, how much of a commute would it be from Mahwah/Ramsey to Grand Central, NYC if taking public transportation?
