I was solicited by a hooker once, inside one of the casinos (Showboat).. Was quite funny.

Atlantic City is no different than any other city in the USA. The area near the Casinos is safer than your own neighborhood. The City spends a fortune on police. Yes you may get panhandled, but it is not a big deal. Go on a weekday and stay in one of the motels along White or Black horse pike. Park in the Casinos for $5 and pull a few slots. Catch a show or eat in one of the numerous restaurants in any of the Casinos. Go shopping in the factory outlet stores near Ceasar's casino. Take a fishing pole and park at Harrah's and fish on their property. Some of the biggest flounder you ever saw in your life can be caught right on their property. Spend an hour in the nearby Atlantic City Aquarium or go out on a boat and spend an afternoon fishing. Get in your car and drive to Brigantine beach. Plenty of free parking, uncrowded and clean. Walk through the State Park there and enjoy the wildlife (watch out for the flies in July). Drive south to Margate and visit Lucy the Elephant. There is so much to do that it is incredible. If you do not lose your shirt gambling, you will find that that Atlantic City area offers incredible value for a really nice and inexpensive vacation.

I agree that some cities are safer than others. If you know of any that do not have poverty and dangerous areas, please let me know where they are. If your point is that Atlantic City has some very dangerous areas, I agree. Considering that it is an old line northern city where there are lots of haves and have nots and lots of people with cash in their pockets, is this really surprising? Would you want to walk through the south bronx late at night with lots of money in your pocket? Does this stop me from wanting to visit broadway or lincoln center in NYC to see a play or hear a concert? I think not.
