Teenagers

my daughter and a few of her friends were sitting in the park in Linden about 5 minutes after 10. As they were walking out, a police officer stopped them and of course said they should not be in the park after closing. The amazing thing is, he wrote them all a ticket. Has anyone heard of this before? The ticket is vague with the exception that she MUST appear in court or risk a bench warrant.
Will there be a fine? Is this how all of these counties trying to make money by clogging up the courts with these types of cases?

Most towns have boro ordiances that cover this. If you speak to the prosecutor first tell them you were unaware of the ordiance and will never do it again. They can either let you go charge you $10 or be real ah and give a bigger fine.

I got a ticket years ago for being in Tompkins Square Park after closing. Make sure she takes it seriously and goes to court, otherwise they can issue a bench warrent for her arrest.

It's just too silly of an issue to let it become something larger.

Oh she will definately appear in court, with her own money. This really shook her. Although its minor, she has never been approached by the police before. I'm almost tempted to let her go by herself.

Yep, I got a few of these when I was a teen in Warinanco Park and once when I was in college playing basketball at midnight at the small park on 1st in Roselle Park. I dont know if this is still true but I had to listen to the judge tell us about vagrancy and the dangers of being out so late and blahblahblah and we had to pay a fine. Now, I dont know if penalties are stiffer.

Is she under 18? If so, I think you HAVE to go with her.

doesn't it say "parks closes at dusk"? I mean all the parks here on LI do...and besides, that's common sense (not to mention it isn't very safe). People who make stupid choices and break the law deserve tickets.

I guess that explains why she didn't just run.

Learned the lesson for next time I guess.

how is it not safe to be in a park... whats the worst that can happen?

I guess I like to live dangerously

I would have thought that the police would just tell em to get out of the park. Seems excessive to give a ticket if its just some kids hanging out

Would you want your daughter hanging out in a park at 10 o'clock @ night? I wouldn't...

It's called loitering...and it's illegal. Furthermore, many parks have signs saying "park closes at dusk." It's illegal, so if you disobey...why shouldn't you face consequences?
